Can we all just agree that the $700 billion has to go?

Not the bailout, but the number itself. They already admitted that it was "just a big number" pulled out of thin air. And regardless of the positive reforms Democrats may be able to attach to the bailout, if the number is still $700 billion it will look as though we agreed to the Paulson/Bush plan. The average low information voter is not going to pay attention to the details, they just know it's a $700 billion bailout.

So shouldn't Congressional Democrats' #1 priority be finding a new number? This may sound cynical or petty but really it's basic marketing isn't it? How can we even have our own plan distinct from Paulson's flawed plan if we're still using his made-up number?

1. The Dem's proposal was at 250 billion

with the authority to disburse more funds with the approval of Congress upon each request.

Thanks for the information. Where can I find out more detailed info on the proposal? I'm still just going off of what I saw on Frank and Reid say in their press conference earlier today, which was pretty vague.
