He's postured as such a know-it-all, and as so vital to Washington in the past week, that the public is going to expect him to measure up to all of that. McCain also has most of the pressure of the two in convincing viewers that he's the foreign policy maven he pretends to be.

Barack Obama shouldn't feel any pressure at all to shape his performance to some preconceived notion of who he is or what he represents. I fully expect for Barack to present the exact same form and substance that he's presented all throughout the campaign.

1. Right.
Just the opposite: he has put himself in the hot seat.

5. Let's just hope
the stress and strain he is under don't become manifest in an ugly outburst. That would be terrible.

4. well yeah and he's crowed about those townhall meetings too
All summer and so far this month. Like Obama was scared to meet him and debate in person. He's made such a big deal out of it that he couldn't lower expectations this late in the game.

And also, with the American people, they favor McCain on experience, leadership readiness and foreign policy but significant margins. Obama is going to make gains with them just by holding his own with McCain, which he can easily do. I think McCain is going to be unprepared too, even at his best he's not a good debator or much of a policy guy.

7. LOL! There have been countless threads here about how he can barely stand up
how he's had a stroke, how he's slurring his speech, etc etc.

And now we're going to claim that there aren't any lowered expectations?

9. If anyone outside of DU was paying attention

. . . it's been McCain to the rescue as he flew to D.C. to save the day. They have to be wondering where all of the magic is that he's been promising. They sure didn't see it from him on Capitol Hill.

And don't tell me that he hasn't been preening around like foreign policy is his 'strong suit'. I recall McCain claiming that he 'knows' how to capture bin-Laden. That should generate some interest.
