Check out this scarily prescient Onion article from 2001...
Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

Old, I know, but the end of Bush's presidency seems like a good time to revisit this classic. From January 17, 2001.

From the article:
"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

"We as a people must stand united, banding together to tear this nation in two," Bush said. "Much work lies ahead of us: The gap between the rich and the poor may be wide, be there's much more widening left to do. We must squander our nation's hard-won budget surplus on tax breaks for the wealthiest 15 percent. And, on the foreign front, we must find an enemy and defeat it."

1. I remember reading that when it came out. It would be funny if it wasn't true.

5. Yeah, it's just a little too spot-on to be as funny as it was in 2001, isn't it?

10. Yeah, they need to find whoever wrote this and give him/her a TV show or something.
This writer is better than most professional pundits.

after it.

13. What is so sad with this is that many people KNEW this crap was
going to go down this way. The Democrats should have laid it on the table as what this administration was. Fascists hell bent on making the top 15% richer and enriching their oil and war profiteering buddies. A huge number of Americans were fooled into voting for these people.

15. I remember the 2000 SNL skit that showed the difference between a Gore admin & Bush admin
Gore was competent, with him solving global warming, the energy crisis, the ME crisis, the healthcare crisis, etc etc etc - and being extremely boring while doing it.

They showed Bush climbing up from under his desk, obviously drunk - the Oval Office is in shambles, the city behind him is in flames, the mobs are about the break down the door - and he cries to the camera "Bein' Presdent is HARD!"

16. And SatireWire from 2000
http://www.satirewire.com/news/jan02/axis.shtml

Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China, and Syria today announced they had formed the "Axis of Just as Evil," which they said would be way eviler than that stupid Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of his State of the Union address.

Axis of Evil members, however, immediately dismissed the new axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name. "Right. They are Just as Evil... in their dreams!" declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. "Everybody knows we're the best evils... best at being evil... we're the best."

Diplomats from Syria denied they were jealous over being excluded, although they conceded they did ask if they could join the Axis of Evil.

"They told us it was full," said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"An Axis can't have more than three countries," explained Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "This is not my rule, it's tradition. In World War II you had Germany, Italy, and Japan in the evil Axis. So you can only have three. And a secret handshake. Ours is wicked cool."

<snip>

While wondering if the other nations of the world weren't perhaps making fun of him, a cautious Bush granted approval for most axes, although he rejected the establishment of the Axis of Countries Whose Names End in "Guay," accusing one of its members of filing a false application. Officials from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chadguay denied the charges.

Israel, meanwhile, insisted it didn't want to join any Axis, but privately, world leaders said that's only because no one asked them.
