McCain-Palin events becoming hate rallies

Palin Supporter To Black Sound Man: "Sit Down, Boy"

By Greg Sargent - October 7, 2008, 9:27AM
Sarah Palin's frequent attacks on the media are now stoking so much outrage among her supporters that they've now taken to abusing reporters:

Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

Palin's ugly attacks, her non-stop lying, and her glaring buffoonery and incompetence are all the media's fault! It is pretty outrageous, this liberal media conspiracy to report accurately on what Palin says and does as she asks us to put her a heartbeat away from being steward of our troubled economy and controlling the most powerful military in human history.

They're Turning Into a Lynch Mob

by NowAndZen
Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 07:01:23 AM PDT

I hope yesterday was the low-water mark of civility in the MCain/Palin campaign, but I'm afraid that McCain and Palin may be heading down a dangerous path and that they do not know where it ends. They may actually be 1 step away from being the rallying leaders of a lynch mob. Their inflamatory speech is metaphorically asking their supporters to bring tar, feathers, pitchforks and torches.

Let's look at yesterday's scary developments.

- Palin supporters shouted nasty epithets at reporters and an African American AV technician.

- Palin made totally unfounded and inflamatory suggestions that Obama is a terrorist or is at least friendly toward terrorists and that he doesn't see the country the way you and I do (wink wink).

- In response to the obove comments, one Palin supporter yelled "Kill him!"

- Palin was introduced by a shaved headed sheriff who denounced what might happen on election day if Barack Hussein Obama is elected.

- McCain asked rhetorically and impregnated with pejorative meaning "Who is Barack Obama?" One McCain supporter yelled "A terrorist!"

more

So we have McCain today getting his crowd riled up asking who Barack Obama is and then apparently giving a wink and a nod when one member of the crowd screams out "terrorist."

And later we have Sarah Palin with the same mob racket, getting members of the crowd to yell out "kill him", though it's not clear whether the call for murder was for Bill Ayers or Barack Obama. It didn't seem to matter.

These are dangerous and sick people, McCain and Palin. Whatever it takes. Stop at nothing.

If you're gonna strap on your stilettos and take off the gloves -- or whatever her combative wardrobe maneuver is -- at least own up to what you're doing and take responsibility for it.

I wish someone like Hillary would make a major speech that calls Palin on her bullshit.

5. Stupid and Hateful are a bad combination...
It may work for the republican racist vote - but if she thinks this will spin into a political future she's mistaken. Middle America is not full of racial hatred - this is a net turn off for voters.

Palin and the McCain campaign are poisoning the atmosphere for any kind of reasoned dialogue that must take place as we move a new direction. There is an ugly side to America and it's hiding behind the face of Sarah Palin.

14. Over the last eight years
the SPLC has recorded a massive upswing in the number and membership in hate groups. Rove and crew knew exactly what they were after and what they were doing when they catered to this element back in the 90's. Hate radio now owns a good chunk of the airwaves and the spew pours forth unchecked and largely unchallenged.

WTF else did anyone think would be the result, when the GOP has actively encouraged such behavior and used it for its own political ends?

The battle isn't just in DC. It will have to be in reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, in putting the brakes on hate radio, clamping down on hate groups, ceasing preaching GOP politics from fringe-cult pulpits, stopping the flow of GOP money being laundered through all of these groups, and a complete assessment of all law enforcement from the DOJ down to dogcatcher. Bottom line: pal around with hate-groups, get your ass bounced from politics, public airwaves, and law enforcement.

It can't be any other way if we're going to wrestle this nation back out of the muck and mire the GOP have dragged it into.

21. "saying nothing, while their supporters are shouting words like 'kill'"
October 7, 2008

HOPE VS. HATE, PART II.... Yesterday, we heard McCain/Palin supporters call Obama a "terrorist," use racial slurs, and exclaim that Obama should be "killed." Today, the hate continues.

In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed "treason!" during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing U.S. troops.

"(Obama) said, too, that our troops in Afghanistan are 'air raiding villages and killing civilians,'" Palin said, mischaracterizing a 2007 remark by Obama. "I hope Americans know that is not what our brave men and women in uniform are doing in Afghanistan. The U.S. military is fighting terrorism and protecting us and protecting our freedom."

Shortly afterward, a male member of the crowd in Jacksonville, Florida, yelled "treason!" loudly enough to be picked up by television microphones.

Now, part of this really is Palin's fault. She's blatantly lying to her supporters, leading them to think Obama really is condemning U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The charge was debunked 15 months ago when Republicans first used it, and it hasn't improved with age. If Palin is capable of shame -- an unlikely scenario, to be sure -- now would be a good time for it.

That said, McCain/Palin have reached a point where they have to decide whether whipping right-wing activists into a frenzy, based solely on lies, is the responsible way to seek national office. The Republican candidates are not literally calling for violence against their political rivals, but they're nevertheless standing by, saying nothing, while their supporters are shouting words like "kill," "terrorist," and "treason" at their rallies.

And given that this rage-filled hatred is in direct response to the McCain/Palin campaign lying to their supporters, now would be the ideal time for these candidates to take a look in the mirror and consider the consequences of a relentlessly negative, breathtakingly dishonest, anger-driven campaign.

24. Someone needs to open McCain's eyes
Appeal to his former self and make him see that his campaign is stirring up racist remarks and hate crimes more publicly then there has been in a long time.
He needs to ask himself if that is how he wants to be remembered, as someone who was ok with these type of supporters.

"The Terrorists Among Us: McCain and Palin"

Submitted by mark karlin on Tue, 10/07/2008 - 6:19am. EditorBlog
MARK KARLIN'S EDITOR'S BLOG

October 7

For nearly eight years the citizens of the United States have been terrorized by their own government.

Yes, we were attacked on 9/11, and it was horrifying. But nothing has been more frightening than to see our democracy hijacked of its Constitution, manipulated into a roller coaster of fear, and economically destroyed.

Osama bin Laden couldn’t have hoped for more than what the Republican Party has delivered for him. He’s had to do nothing since 9/11 to achieve his goals of bringing down our democracy: Bush and Cheney accomplished them for him without Osama lifting a finger since that horrifying day.

But the reign of right wing terror extends farther back than that for those of us old enough to remember hope.

In the ‘60s, as a mass movement for Civil Rights, the end to another senseless war, and the emancipation of women moved toward success, JFK, MLK, and RFK were shot down, assassinated. It was violence that was echoed later in Timothy McVeigh killing men, women and children in an Oklahoma federal building because of his alleged grievances against the government. He was an NRA, Sarah Palin sort of guy.

Now, desperate to win at any cost, McCain and Palin are actually condoning ugly lynch mob cries of terrorism and assassination against Barack Obama. We have, after 8 years of a terrorist attack that George W. Bush could probably have prevented by reading a warning about Al-Qaeda hijackings and putting out a red alert at airports, a presidential and vice-presidential candidate of the party of violence condoning talk of terrorism and assassination.
If this were not a democracy that is still flexible enough to include the pushing at the envelope of incitement to commit criminal acts, McCain and Palin would be arrested."
