When he announced he was pulling out of MI my reaction was its over, but as the last few days have wore on and I have started to see the huge moves in the polls, it started to dawn on me that this may be a strategy that MIGHT, might work for McCain.
While the polls may allude to a landslide for Obama I expect that the reality is it is still going to be a close race, because it really does hinge on the GOTV and getting out the NEW and YOUNG voters to the polls, which has been in the past a challenge even in years where registration went up actual votes often didnt raise even close to the new rolls.
Now how do you stop the Obama machine, how do you gum up the new process and passion to fight?
You make it easy, remove the fight and enemy, make the campaign and voters settle into complacency and believe Obama has it in the bag.
If we start to get too confident, if the polls look too strong, many wont work as hard as under the gun, people are less likely to actually make the extra effort to get to the polls because "Obamas got so much of a lead I'm not needed", "they wont miss my one vote"
Its a stupid strategy for McCain if it is true, and I dont think it is likely to work, but it does make me nervous none the less.
I know McCain was a lousy pilot who crashed 5 planes, but in a fighter jet when you have engine problems or misfires your taught to "flame them out" go into a dive, rushing airr through the turbines and then kick the engines over again to get them started again, to gain enough power to pull out, this could be and looks like a very similar move on McCains behalf and while he looks like he is in a death spiral nose dive, I think we have to be careful to watch for him to refire the engines at the last minute and pull up.
