42. GOP party elders told him to tone it down or risk a 60-seat Dem Senate majority
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 07:22 PM by ClarkUSA
That's what Ed Rollins was saying last night on CNN which is why you saw retiring Congressmen like Re. LaHood (an IL kingpin
during the DeLay days) today, and no doubt many others behind the scenes, fretting about McCain's "tone" because it was/is
turning off everyone but the the Rabid Right, including those all-important independent swing voters as well as undecideds.

Just look at the latest Newsweek poll to see why McCain agreed to back off (although Palin will continue to do so in good cop,
bad cop fashion).

3. It's about the about face that McCain has taken when his audience shouts out
inflammatory remarks about Obama. I hope they show the clip of McCain 'defending' Obama. I hope you get a chance to see it - it's almost painful to watch it's so transparent.

thinking that once Obama takes office, little by little these frightened, hateful people will see that not only is he NOT a threat to them or our country, he in fact is supporting and helping us. Maybe their fear and hatred will fade. I really think that's a possibility and I would love to see that happen to our country. Could you imagine?

There will always be the 30% that is unmovable, but I think the majority will like the changes.
Out of Iraq, and stabilizing our economy could set us up for solid foundation for future elections.

I believe McCain IS a better man than this campaign has shown. He's let desperation destroy his better angels, and the Rabid Palin Wing has hijacked whatever honor his candidacy once had. The end of a good man? Flying too close to the sun? Fighting the Last War? Sad.

I saw the old John McCain today. He was as he once was, rather forthright if nothing else.

At least he did what had to be done for America.

He had to stop the fear and it is only he that could do it.

So, for that one John, yes you are a :patriot:

and told him to back off and to stop the lies as problems of a serious nature were on the rise and was not the least bit appropriate - if fact inciting people to riot, hate, and fearmongering.

It had to stop and McCain had to stop it before something serious happens.

He knows the truth and was forced to speak it. It was up to McCain to speak this truth and I'll give him credit on this tiny piece, he did state the truth re: Obama. A decent man, a family man ... not an Arab, etc.

18. This strategy isn't working for him (these type of attacks)
because I don't think McCain's heart is into it. It seems so forced for him to have to go along with this style, which, I think, is why it's coming up now instead of three or four months ago.

I hope that's the case.

Someone like Bush can get away with running a campaign like this because Bush has no soul or heart. I can't ever picture Bush telling a supporter that his opponent (be it Gore or Kerry) that they are good, decent men.

McCain is coming across like the Grinch, his heart may be three sizes too small, but at least there's evidence that its there.

65. McCain never was a right winger...
The thing is, he sold out to them after calling them "agents of intolerance" during the 2000 campaign. He realized that he couldn't get the nomination without at least some of their support, so he did a 180 on that issue and began hanging out with Falwell and Hagee. Well, recently he's been fueling the flames of ignorance, bigotry, and paranoia about Obama that already existed in the right wing. So now that he's turned on them, it's only going to make them angrier...and that includes being angry at McCain.

49. He started this and let it grow out of control - maybe he needs to confess to the lies he's spread
Maybe then it might cool some tempers - but until the senile bastard comes out and puts it all on the line and ends the hate speech and shit-stirring, this will just continue to build momentum and who knows whats going to end up happening.

This is probably one of the lowest points in American History, especially where Presidential politics are concerned. I'm sure our forefathers are rolling over in their graves watching this.

22. The angry mob is storming toward the village with torches and
McCain is now meakly saying, "wait, no." So what do you think will happen when the mob comes upon him? WIll they stop and retreat or just stampede right over him? I'm thinking the latter.

He's not only a bad person, he's an idiot.

If he hadn't been called out on it, he'd be still doing it. Whipping that frenzy even more.

Thank you people in media and government who have a conscience.

29. it's pathetic
But it's the classic case of you reap what you sow. He has trashed and pissed on Obama's reputation for 10 days. Now the most evil underbelly of his supporters are all fired up. They feel justified in their ignorance and bigotry. I would be embarassed to be a Republican just watching those raucous crowds and hearing their misinformed comments, pure stupidity. Sad. It's like a years throw from a lynch mob.

44. This marks the end of McCain's campaign - he sank himself and its too late
He was on his last legs and he grabbed for the lowest point to try to drag Obama down to him. He stoked a fire that was burning under the surface until it became a forest fire - and it's going to keep growing regardless of what the senile old man says.

I guarantee the Secret Service sat his stuttering ass down and had a talk with him, along with many of his supporters that have voiced their displeasure. They probably told him that if he wanted to remembered as anything other than a pathetic and desperate senile old man, that he would have to cut it out and tone it down. The RNC is already running away from him as fast as possible, trying to salvage house and senate races - and he single-handedly set them back 6 months in two days of this bullshit.

63. What's crazy is that he will lose some of his base by backing down from the hate rhetoric.
He'd better watch out, his mob may try to take him out and put the more rabid Palin on the top of the ticket.

76. We may see Palin relegated to background cheerleading after this
If they plan on running her in 2012 - which make no mistake, they are, they've hitched the whole wagon to her - they will have to disassociate her from this entire mess. They will keep her mouth shut, let her stand in the background, and just coast into November 4th. It's the only way that they can save any hopes they have with her.

Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 07:27 PM by political_Dem
if no one stepped up and told him that it was conduct unbecoming of a man in his position. That's why I can't pity this man.

He started this mess. He let it go on. He stopped when someone persuaded him to cease the behavior. He didn't do this on his own accord. After all, how can people forget his behavior toward Obama during both debates and on the Senate Floor?

This man hates Obama. He meant to do it until it got out of his hands.

93. Heck yeah, he meant to do it.
That's the problem with McCain (besides the fact that he's a dink) he doesn't think past what he feels at the moment. He has no self-discipline.

He feels entitled and figures some way it will all work out. His money always brought him through before.

81. Reminds me of a quote from Dune
"A leader, you see, is one of the things that distinguishes a mob from a people. He maintains the level of individuals.
Too few individuals, and the people reverts to a mob."

They spend all this time catering to the mob and now they have lost control and can't bring it back. It's too late for nice words, he's going to become an enemy as well to these people.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I'm an atheist but this sums it all for me...For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind.

82. I'm not convinced.
Is it my tin foil hat or am I just a little more untrusting of what appears to be going on? Couldn't the McCain/Palin campaign just have been putting in plants to make outrageous comments, bringing the media's attention to that issue instead of the economy and then when a plant says something ridiculous (e.g. the woman tonight -- "he's a, a, a, an Arab") McCain can shoot it down in a packaged prepared way and insulate himself from any accusations later on about racism or Obama's background (when maybe they're brought on by different fronts)?
