Rage Grows at McCain/Palin Rallies as Obama Strides Toward Victory

Diary Entry by Mark C. Eades

Red-faced, racially-charged Republican rage appears to be growing at McCain/Palin rallies as Barack Obama's national and swing-state lead over John McCain continues to build. New videos from McCain/Palin events in Pennsylvania and Ohio provide an up-close look at the face of hate as McCain/Palin supporters shout abuse at reporters and at peaceful pro-Obama demonstrators. These echo written accounts from McCain/Palin events published recently in the national press.

Video from a rally in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania includes shouts of "Obama is a terrorist!" and "Obama is a Muslim!" in addition to epithets directed at pro-Obama demonstrators such as "commie faggot" and "socialist swine." Some even shouted, "Go back to Russia!" as though lost somewhere back in the middle of the Cold War. One man shouted "Die...! European socialists!" at pro-Obama demonstrators. When asked by the videographer if he really thought they should die, the man replied: "Everyone dies, don't they?" Asked by a pro-Obama demonstrator if a rape victim should have to pay for her own rape exam (as in Wasilla under Palin's watch as mayor), another McCain/Palin supporter shouted: "She should die!" Video from a rally in Strongsville, Ohio includes similar charges that Obama is a terrorist and that he is a secret Muslim. Asked if she believed Obama is a terrorist, one woman affirmatively replied, "He has the bloodlines"; and referred to Obama's middle name, Hussein, clearly indicating that Obama's heritage makes him suspect in her view.

5. Ana Marie Cox of Wonkette blog goes to rallies, says they are all crazy now
Ana Marie has been going to McCain/Palin rallies and says sane Repubs are nowhere to be seen at most of these events, instead they are virtually all foaming at the mouth fanatics.

9. When I read the title of this
thread I thought, it's just got to be one of those fake stories - can't possibly be true. Oh, but good lord, it is. McCain should be ashamed of himself. This is truly beyond comprehension. This has got to be an all time low.

12. Senator McCain, this is why people don't trust you
He gives a half-hearted defense of Obama at a rally yesterday, says he wants to keep things respectful in this campaign, then the very next day the exact behavior continues unabated at a rally for his running mate. It reminds me of a former friend in a writing group who used to print attacks on me, would then apologize to me for it, then continue attacking after the apology. How can anybody believe any apology from McCain at this point? He's clearly endorsing the hatred.

18. I still think what's happened is that
all the "mainstream" McCain Palin supporters are drifting away, leaving them with the drooling dregs of ignorance and hate at their rallies.

I love the "go back to Russia" remark. It's like the wingnut who told me that if I didn't like it here, I should maybe move to Finland. I answered that except for the language problem (although most Finns speak English) and the six-month nights, I could dig Helsinki. Very cool place. Good beer. Pretty liberal. Clean. Good public transportation.

20. The loonies are sinking the ticket
The far-right can't elect anyone. Thankfully they are pegged at about 25% of the population.
Their behavior is emptying the middle for McCain.
Obama's numbers are up, not because we hard-core Democrats are supporting him even more than we already do, but because the middle doesn't trust Palin and doesn't want to be associated with these knuckle-draggers.
The middle decides the election and they are deserting the McCain camp.
Many won't vote at all. Some will switch to Obama, as recent polls are indicating.
These morons are sinking McCain's campaign and they are too stupid to realize it.

24. The Real Face
Of the Republican Party. Where is Chuckie 'good enough to be Biden' Hagel, where are all of those alleged moderate Republicans, the ones we are supposed to reach across the aisle to? They are all giving tacit approval to all of this hate by not speaking out against it. I have lost the shred of respect I could summon for a hand full of them, and that goes double for Arnie of Hollywood, who should speak against that racist taint before it stains him in the public eye forever. He knows better.
Not one good Republican. Anyone who would vote for his ticket at this point is not even a good person.

34. They gave license to this...
they let it be ok that someone could express their racism, bigotry and rage, and now they don't know how to put the genie back in the bottle. Perhaps they didn't understand what people who harbor these deep-seeded emotions are capable of but if recent statements by McCain are any indication, they weren't prepared for the response they were unleashing by creating a safe haven for people to express their inner demons.

My God. "Get a job"? "Go back to Russia"? How original.

I guess they don't realize the Soviet Union no longer exists. I mean, McCain still thinks there's such a thing as Czechoslovakia.

The man who thought the rape victim should die might feel more at home in a community of islamic extremists. Ah, the irony.
