McCain-Palin use the 'S' word (socialism) - CNN
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/18/mccain-palin-use-the-s-word/

CONCORD, North Carolina (CNN) – John McCain stepped up his rhetoric against Barack Obama on taxes in his weekly radio address, comparing his plan to 'socialist' programs that would “convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth.”

The remarks were part of a theme McCain has used since the final presidential debate that criticizes Obama’s philosophy, but his most recent comments were the first time he directly invoked the word 'socialist.'

In the radio address that aired Saturday morning, McCain didn't directly call Obama a socialist, but he let the now-famous Joe 'the Plumber' Wurzelbacher nearly do it for him.

“You see, believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that help us all make more of it. Joe in his plainspoken way, said this sounded a lot like socialism,” McCain said.

7. The Dems should be countering the "socialist" meme and not let the Repubs own it
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 02:22 PM by CakeGrrl
This was brought up on Bill Maher last night: The Repubs, no surprise, are falsely equating 'socialism' with 'communism'. Joe Voter isn't paying enough attention to know the real difference, so when he hears "socialist", he has that Pavlovian angry response to the implication that he's going to be subjected to a communist regime if Obama's elected.

The irony, as was pointed out on Real Time, is that Joe Voter's freedom is safer under Obama. Bill framed it correctly: Ask someone if they believe we should all have access to healthcare. They'll probably say 'yes' without realizing that that is an example of socialism.

Just like the meme on taxation, the Repubs dominate and own this until they're corrected. I realize the MSM is no help in getting the Democratic message out, but the Dem surrogates need to make the most of the appearances they have.

John McCain is happy to keep misinforming voters. We have to stop letting him.

12. This is a really dumb move on McCain's part.
I think this will be similar to his "fundamentals of the economy are strong" statement. He's calling tax cuts for the middle class socialism while lamenting tax hikes for the rich. Obama is already turning this around on him and hitting him for comparing help for working Americans as welfare. This is going to continue the impression that McCain is out of touch and is a Bush clone.

13. What this dumbass doesn't understand is that with the economy tanking and Americans in huge debt
spreading the wealth sounds like a PRETTY DAMN GOOD IDEA.

Even though that's not at all what Obama proposes, McCain's framing only helps Obama, IMO.

Struggling Americans wouldn't mind a little help from the uber-rich right about now.

As Jonathan Alter once said on Countdown after the market tanking, "We're all socialists now."
