This election has brought out the worst of America, the worst
I never realized how much hatred there could be from people, but this election proves America is still the land of mouth breathers and grade school drop outs. From the hatred of 'Dem Liberals and Homo's', to the OUTRIGHT bigitory being shown Barack Obama by a NATIONAL POLITICAL PARTY, it sickens me how we haven't climbed out of the mud yet. And the dirt the McPain campaign is slinging in an attempt to appeal to the fears and prejudices of the ignorant class is frightening. Something has to change when this election is done.

America, I do not know Thee. No more years of Reich-wing rule. GOBAMA

1. I'm glad that some of these fuckers have outed themselves
It will be a bit like them inflicting themselves with their own scarlet letter.

I am glad they are out of the shadows, I am glad their more reasonable neighbors can see them for the vile, hateful, people they are.

3. Yeah, but also the best.
I mean, think about it: a majority of Americans might actually vote in one of the most intelligent, compassionate politicians of my lifetime, and he also happens to be a Black man whose middle name is Hussein. Think how much good that will do to our standing in the rest of the world.

The horrible, ugly underside of our culture has been revealed in the last 8 years, and especially the last couple of months. But thank God most Americans seem to be rejecting it.

4. The Best AND the Worst
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 08:11 AM by ComtesseDeSpair
Obama has brought out the absolute BEST in people: Optimism, hope, activism, charity, togetherness, love.
McCain has brought out the absolute WORST in people: Hatred, bigotry, divisiveness, violence, anger.

How anyone with a conscience could vote for Hate is beyond me.

6. I've been sparring with a Republican on another message board....
it's like talking to jello. She finaly admitted she would not be swayed. She can not discuss the election. She was told to be a Republican years ago and that's what she will be no matter what the facts are. As you said...fortunately some have woken up. Is it enough to get Obama elected? I pray it is.

7. It's reflective of "hate" radio spread far and wide
It's limpballs, Faux news, politically driven MSM towards the party they favor, lack of "true" journalism, etc. One can not have a steady diet of hate, lies amd anger, and not be affected. I also believe that watching too much TV is also bad for ones psyche. We have become a "reality" based society......voting each other off the planet. We are ALL in this together. There are no more places to discover and move too. We must turn the tide and tho we differ, try to be respectful to one another. I fear it's gone to far to the dark side.

Wow. Good summation of what our country has become.

I put a lot of the blame on hate radio, too. Limbaugh has been around for what, 15-20 years, spewing his hate. My mother started listening to him in the early 90s & in just a few short years she morphed into a mean-spirited hateful woman that I didn't even recognize. After Katrina, she sent me the most hateful email about how 'those people' deserved what they got. I told her to stop sending me anything of that nature or anything political. She said, "You liberals have no sense of humor." :wow: She died last year, but let me tell you, I lost my real mother years ago. The woman she had become was not the woman who raised me. It is a terrible thing to see someone you love transform like that.

This country could go a long way by taking Limbaugh & others like him off the air. Some may say that is repression of speech, but I say hate speech should not be protected. Anyone who gets on the airwaves & says those who are different or disagree with them should be killed, or rounded up & put in camps, should not be allowed on the air.

15. There are many western countries where electing a minority would be unthinkable
It just does not happen -- ever. So while we're kicking our country for one thing, we should imo recognize the
good in it.

Eight years after extremists with "strange" names destroyed the WTC, just a few decades after Selma, Alabama and
the murder of the poll workers in Mississippi, the US is about to elect (unless the bastards
steal the election) an African-American man named Barack Obama to the White House. I think that shows amazing
growth and a real maturity. There will always be idiots (there are in every culture), but the majority for once
is actually doing an amazing thing.

17. Here's something to think about... there will be blood
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 08:37 AM by Essene
The bigotry and anger we've seen pop up is not new and it is not going away. I think it's vital that we not mistake this for MERE bigotry or hate. There's something much deeper, darker and troubling going on.

It's about a portion of americans that are truly scared about the future. They are alienated by our society, by our world and they are freaked out. This is not merely a race matter. These folks don't feel like they are at war in their own nation, and don't see the government as their own.

Let's be frank.

Many of these people think of america as a white/homogeneous, mostly pastoral and christian nation. They truly believe that is what america is, always was and is supposed to remain. Millions of home schooled and generally provincial americans truly, passionately feel america is being ruined.

They turn on the TV and see an america with "neutral" big city coastal accents and which reflects a cosmopolitan culture that threatens them. They see an america where minorities are increasingly brought in from the margins and in some please becoming the majority. Some minorities are more than "normal," but even held up as standards of beauty, intelligence, etc.

They see "faith" as under siege from a secular, atheist popular and cosmopolitan culture. The media, the education system and higher education have all become a threat. Any and all criticism of extreme religious doctrine or theocratic impulses are taken as anti-faith. We're seeing a MASSIVE explosion of revivalism and theocratic movements in america, all tied to this cultural backlash.

At the risk of sounding alarmist, i'd point out that most terrorism in the USA has been domestic terrorism.

Hundreds of church bombings. Kidnappings. Death threats. Murders. There have even been suicide bombing attempts in recent years that the media doesnt discuss.

Let's not forget Oklahoma City and the Olympics attacks in the 1990s... nor the anthrax event.

Folks.

This is hear to stay and it's going to get worse.

If we truly slip into a severe depression, expect these feelings and fears to solidify among the portion of america that's increasing feeling themselves literally at war at home. They are scared about the future and alienated from their own society.

There will be extremists with ties to the theocratic and militia stuff, who will continue to rise up violently.

24. Fear. They are ruled by fear.
Fear of change, fear of those who are different than they are, fear that they will not get everything they think they deserve or that someone else may get something they don't deserve. Fear, fear, fear. No wonder they are so mean & hateful. I would be too, if I had that much fear in my life.

I agree, it's not going to go away. If Obama gets elected, it will get worse. There has been concern expressed over what will happen if they steal this election - that we will take to the streets. If we do take to the streets, I don't worry about us. I worry more about what will happen if we win. People fueled by fear & hate are dangerous & they will lash out with violence.

I hope Obama is prepared, because what they tried to do to Clinton is child's play compared to what they will try to do to him. Did you ever see "The Hunting of a President"? It was a great documentary about how the repubs tried to take Clinton down. It was a witch hunt, pure & simple. I think Obama is a better man than Clinton in many regards, but these people will try. They will put all their energy & their hate & their divisiveness into it.

You should consider making your post it's own thread.

18. and the best, the very best. i know what you are saying and i kinda think it is a good
thing. it is being exposed out loud, in the ugliest and most undeniable wya for all to see.

people who have insisted that isnt who america is, while blacks experiencing it are seeing now. obama has people that say they are bigots actually putting it aside and voting for him. this is healing hearts. blacks are FINALLY a part of the political scene. and such a strong majority and a wave is happening for obama. republicans are standing up to their party and voting for obama

it is showing the very best of who we are too.

still in America. It has reached ridiculous levels even in my very blue town in a very blue state. I have never seen sign stealing this widespread.

23. for you...

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.
- Jacques Anatole I. France

But the nearer the dawn the darker the night,
And by going wrong all things come right;
Things have been mended that were worse,
And the worse, the nearer they are to mend.
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,
Tales of a Wayside Inn-

Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
- Margaret Mead
