Obama responds to Pittsburgh mugging

Obama's Pennsylvania spokeswoman, Allison Price, responds to that Pittsburgh story:

This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.

23. But this thread is very different, and necessary.
And the campaign did exactly the right thing.

Some other source needs to investigate whether or not it's a hoax.

4. Normally I'd agree with you

But after watching one of my favorite Senators, maybe my favorite, John Kerry ignore so much in 2004 with the worry that it would 'give legitimacy' to attacks on him, I am no longer a fan of that plan. Obama did the right thing even if the attack was made up.

10. what would you have them do?
1) ignore it and be accused of being callous or complicit

2) challenge it and be accused of "attacking the victim"

If it comes out that the attack was faked, the campaign's statement won't hurt them so of course it was the right move.

15. That was my initial thought too, but I think they probably had to say

something. Just in case. Staying silent would provide more red meat/distractions for repugs. Releasing a statement now takes the focus off of Obama and puts it on how fake the story is.

17. cause it will come out and STILL show obama and his people are better than that
did we hear the same from mccain for the woman canvasser who was attacked by an outraged mccain supporter. has news even talked about that story. but we know about it and we know that obama personally called and talked to her about her attack and how sorry he was she experienced. this is consistently who obama is.

21. I think it was very carefully worded to avoid that.
If this woman did indeed fake the attack, then every word in that statement remains true.

:)

13. I'd love a
link to that story if you have one. I don't doubt I'll get some trash comments from a certain relative and would like to fire back with something.

This is getting weirder and weirder. 11 days out and I can only imagine how much more this can escalate. There are some scary sick creeps out there who seem hot to trot to stir up some hate.

We are not the campaign. We are the rude assholes out on the blogs who are free to ask 'what the fuck is up with the backwards B?' and when there is no explanation call

BULLSHIT

.

Inside is not outside. The rules are different.

14. It was a fake, but I think this was the only response the campaign could make.
Any other response from him gives the story more attention. I think it's obvious to anyone with a brain that this is fake, and this story will die on the vine soon enough anyway.

25. Yeah. I'm pretty much done playing with it. If it's a Parlockian incident, that will be revealed.
The way DU works is that we hash out this stuff together, with opinions ranging wildly.. until we either get bored, come up with something that rings true, or the incident is eventually revealed to be BS. Back in 2004, there was a fellow, Phil Parlock, who used to bring his kids to events and claim that people hit the children, or pushed them, or stole signs from them, etc. It went through this same cycle on DU.. until it turned out that he was a total fraud.

I'm done with this story, and I hope that it's not true, but even the hardcore McCain people at FreeRepublic are skeptical about this. Too many holes in the story. I'm ready to move on and not let some media blip derail us.
