I hate overhearing political discussions from people who have no idea what they are talking about
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 03:15 PM by trumad
I was in a small diner this morning and heard two guys at another table talking Obama, taxes, Iraq, etc. They were dead wrong on every subject. It's as if they took all the talking points they hear on Right Wing radio and Fox News, mix it in a pot, drink it, and then spit it out. One huge blend of stupidity.

The political ignorance in this country, with the help of the MSM, is what I fear the most.

1. Did you say anything to correct them?
While it might not change their mind, it might make them think twice about voicing such idiotic 'concerns' in public or to others.

3. I think we all know that feeling. We can change that. But we need media reform to do it.
Taht's why they repealed the Fairness Doctrine. It was their first step. Dumbing down is real.

A dumb nation is just what we're fighting.

It's really difficult to take, isn't it. Frustrating as hell. And annoying. And offensive. And lots of things. Especially when they get arrogant about it.

4. My lunatic right-wing assistant at work is just like this.
She carries on right outside my office door with another co-worker. I try to ignore most of the ignorant drivel that floats into my office but sometimes I just have to say something.

Now she's upset with me for telling her that the Washington Times is owned by Reverend Moon. She had no idea.

Earlier today she said, "Well, tomorrow it will all be over" and I snapped at her, "No it won't." She said what, what? I pointed out that we'll still have this enormous mess on our hands (caused by her party, I didn't add despite real temptation). She looked kind of dazed and said, "Oh yes, I guess you're right."

5. I'm afraid that I usually add something to their conversation as I walk by..
I've done it several times in this election, and it has worked well. Some woman was with friends in the store, and she was going on and on about how "all politicians are alike, all liars" and I looked back and said nicely, but chiding, "oh, c'mon, let's not get cynical, they're not all alike" And her friends smiled and laughed, and then she said "well, I'm STILL undecided, i have to do more research. They're basically exactly the same on all the issues!", again, I chimed in.. as I was now part of the group with her friends.. "oh, that's not true, not on the big issues. Just go to their websites and read their positions, that should help." Her friends nodded and said "that's what we've been trying to tell you! (her)" Then I looked at them and said, "frankly, the choice of Palin as running mate should tell you everything you need to know." And left.

6. I usually pick my battles....
This morning I let it go because I was with my youngest boy and I didn't feel like getting into a verbal fight with these two knuckleheads.

7. I know what you mean. There was a letter to the editor the other day
in the local small paper, saying Obama didn't know anything about the constitution. The deadline had already passed for the paper to accept anymore political letters otherwise I would have responded and let the dumb shit know Obama was a constitutional law professor. Other people have thought he went from community activist directly to US Senator, still others think he's going to raise taxes on anyone making over $40,000.

They sound like a bunch of robots repeating what they've listened to or been emailed over and over. Can't they even think for themselves?

9. I overheard something similar yesterday.
Two men, one in his 70s, the other around his 50s, said they hoped McCain would win, and both had a visceral reaction when Obama's name was mentioned.

This surprised me a bit, being in NYC, but later, one of the men was complaining about the $200/month he paid for health insurance for he and his wife.

I was very tempted to yell, "Then why the fuck are you voting for McCain, idiot?!"

10. I was in a Dinner the other day and overheard a bunch of Republicans saying that Palin had more
experience that Obama did. OK. I admit it. I kinda blew my top. I looked over at my wife, and said in a voice whereby everybody could hear me,

"When in gods name are people going to wake up in this country and quit electing stupid people to run it?"

Hell, I even scared myself and I could not believe what I had just done. The place got very quite for a few minutes. Needless to say, I did not hear anymore talk from the Palin table.
