Obama: 'A bittersweet time'
Obama: 'A bittersweet time'

Obama, in North Carolina, briefly told the crowd of his grandmother's death.

"This is a little of a bittersweet time for me," he said. "We have had a remarkable campaign and – when we started 21 months ago I didn’t know how it would turn out, and no matter what happens tomorrow I’m going to feel good about how it’s turned out because all of you have created this incredible campaign.

"Some of you heard that my grandmother who helped raise me passed away early this morning. And – look. She has gone home. She died peacefully in her sleep, with my sister at her side. So there’s great joy as well as tears. I’m not going to talk about it too long, because it’s hard a little to talk about. I want everybody to know though a little bit about her."

He described her life, and described her as a "a very humble person and a very plainspoken person" and "one of those quiet heroes," shifting into his stump speech about how he would fight for people like her.

Later, Obama thanked McCain for his condolences, which he called "incredibly gracious of Senator McCain."

"It's an example of that Senator McCain has continued to serve his country honorably," he said, before returning to attacks on McCain on the economy.
