I was in Brazil a couple of weeks ago, saw an Obama sand sculpture on Ipanema Beach.

I talked with locals about their elections (that were just over I think, or just starting) and about our upcoming Presidential election.

I learned that in Brazil, you cannot be issued a valid passport if you are not registered to vote. Period. Also, you can vote as early as 16 years of age, although it isn't mandatory until you reach 18.

3. From what I can make out

the USA is actually the laughing stock of most of the world for not being able to run open and transparent elections so its hardly surprising to find that the Brazilians seem to know what they're doing.
