My daughter, who is 10, has discovered campaign work! She and I have gone door to door here in Chester County (PA) for the past few weeks. But yesterday, she really got into it!
First, as a little background, the great news from here is that our local Obama office was so overwhelmed with volunteers this past weekend that they completed all the contact work they had for Sat-Sun-Mon by the end of the day Sunday. The guy who runs the office said there was an "embarrassment of riches" in the number of volunteers who showed up. The same thing happened at another nearby office. So yesterday, we were sent to Coatesville, PA to help there.
After we did our first walk - knocking on about 40 doors - we came back to get more. And they, too, were out of routes to walk because so many people had come from the other offices that had finished up! So we went to the phone bank. Now "cold calling" isn't always the most fun, so I was a little apprehensive about having her try it, but she wanted to, so.... In the end, she made 63 calls and talked to about 20 people! She had people hang up on her, had one guy yell at her, had one person tell her that her vote was personal (to which she replied "I understand that - it's just good that your voice is getting heard"), and also talked to others who were Obama supporters. A rather typical day on the phones. The good news is that she wants to go back today to make more calls! Not deterred at all by the negatives - pumped up by the positives instead!
We are leaving now to go vote - and then back to the phone bank!
