Poll: Obama's Handling Of Transition Is Winning Over McCain Voters
Poll Shows Obama Gains Support
Public Roots for His Success in Face of Economic Crisis but Is Wary of Big Spending

By LAURA MECKLER

WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama is entering the White House with an enormous reservoir of goodwill from an American public that is rooting for his success in the face of bad economic times, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.

The mood presents opportunities as well as perils for Mr. Obama, who confronts a series of challenges amid expectations he will handle them well.

Overall, a majority of Americans are confident in Mr. Obama's ability to govern and unify the country, with many who didn't vote for him now seeing him in a positive light. The poll found that 73% of adults approve of the way he is handling the transition and his preparations for becoming president.

"So far so good," said Kathleen Broussard, a 25-year-old massage therapist from Dallas. She voted for Republican Sen. John McCain for president, but said that the day after the election she felt a sense of joy about Mr. Obama's victory that hasn't gone away. "I respect him. And we're all praying for the best. We definitely needed a change, and he's definitely that change."

1. This in the face of...
...the venom from the McSame/Palin(comparison) campaign.

Perhaps he IS a transformational figure.

Open-minded McSame supporters need to be given credit, also. They weren't ALL "joe the faux-plumber".

PEACE!

3. I just wonder what they really thought Obama was going to do.
I mean, sure, he's made some appointments, but none of them have been particularly shocking. I just don't know how one switches so wildly from voting for McCain to approving of Obama without anything really happening in between. What was the major malfunction on voting day?

I'm not trying to be critical... I just don't understand.

2. I talked to a senior citizen last night who said this very thing.
He voted for McCain, I think because he is a veteran, but has been particularly impressed with Obama's picks for his cabinet and his staff.

4. I don't care about ignorant voters right now. I'm interested in what
direction we are going to take and how much change. Ignorant voters got us into this mess and are irrelevant.
