47. So to sum it up......
Barack Obama really was the "manchurian candidate", and the democrats who voted for him in the primary were too stupid to recognize it, carrying that stupidity into the general election in a nation-wide movement to have him elected because it "was time", and a pony was mentioned. Did the historical, and ideological aspects of this election overshadow the issues we face today? For many, you betcha! Poor Barack, attacked from the right, attacked from the left, and lately attacked with enthusiasm by the msm. Obama is now a Clinton. Thanks.

7. HARD to believe isn't it? Everything goes on "just like normal" while . . .
WE support Death and Destruction and celebrate that we were able to have

OUR

"little" war elsewhere.

It's sooooooooooooooooooo sad and crazy-sick that every day I am, and millions of others really are, surprised that we are going about our business as usual and just letting this happen.

8. No it's easy to believe for the rational.
The primaries confer absolutely no power on the winner of the party not in power. Nor does the general until a couple of months later.

Does that mean Obama will (or should) start an immediate 100% precipitous withdrawal one minute after inauguration? No.

Will he however reduce these deaths and the duration from what they would have been if he had lost the general election? Nobody knows for sure, but I believe so.

But until Jan 21 he can't do one blessed thing about it.

But, will "we" make ourselves precisely and definitively clear on this issue? (Iraq, Afghanistan . . . ?)

12. Unfortnately, based on stuff I've seen, unlikely. Think we need
a revived anti-war movement. What I'd like to see is a lifting of the pentagon ban
on showing funerals/coffins (when families approve)coming back. That was instituted by Bush/Cheney in an
effort to create an environment where my cartoon is reality.

are down. Nancy Grace does show pics and I think Stephanopolis does - but that's it.

But they made a huge deal about american deaths in Mumbai.

13. Thank you for posting this
As a person involved in the anti war movement and who is deeply concerned about trying to force our form of democracy down the throats of those who do not want it I believe this kind of post can not be posted enough.

I have noticed a lot of pro-war B.S. on DU - It seemed to start up during the primaries and has just gotten worse. I have been told to shut up about the war - it is not important. I am not kidding here... I have been told I am a "single issue voter" which couldn't be further from the truth. I happen to be disgusted by a phony war killing a million Iraqi people and as of today 4209 dead Americans. I am not a pacifist and I am not some crazy, wild, wide-eyed liberal - I am a mother though and it will be over my dead body that either one of my kids get used up by a megalomaniac president and his ilk.

I am very concerned about keeping a Bush appointee on in charge of the Pentagon. It is a place that needs serious rebuilding.

I am also disappointed that Obama has said he will ramp up the war in Afghanistan and will take as long as he wants to take to withdraw the troops from Iraq. The bottom line is, we do not belong in Iraq, period. There is no debate I am willing to engage in on the topic. Out of Iraq ASAP.

K&R

15. you are right. It has swung to the center right around here
There was a time when our majority would never, ever, become complacent and say the things I am hearing
now - that pretty much say take your time in getting out. Where does this come from? How can people
change so much? If not a purposeful effort to diffuse the subject from regaining steam? People are
still making a hell of a lot of money over there and I wouldn't put it past any in power now to squelch
wherever they can.

I am hopeful that all the subtle warning signs are meaningless and that Obama will propel a safe but
urgent withdrawal.

23. Let's be honest about it ---
Most of the real "lefties" here have been tombstoned, driven off by the rightward trend, or are now the objects of a great deal of ridicule and derision when they voice their opinions.

It's pretty damned ugly -- and scary -- here sometimes. :(

The election has brought onboard a lot of Obama supporters/Big D voters -- true believers -- vs. those of us who are generally politically active and are willing to challenge/question what is really going on. The "true believers" may be a big problem should the administration engage in some hinky behavior.

28. I agree. It is almost instantaneous - the pouncing - I always think
some alarm goes off when I post anything with even a whiff of dissension. Then I get called crazy, idiot, freeper, wrong -
ha - and those are the good names. So you think all these people voted for the man solely - and not for the ideas and actions
we hope to accomplish? I don't know.

the Crossover movement was going to be for the Obama candidacy.

Even though I personally think this war is morally Evil, I'm not a single issue voter (hence my support for Obama ((after Richardson))), because I recognize that these are SOCIAL questions to be answered honestly in actions by each and every individual. However, it is an absolutely incontrovertible fact that the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan affect absolutely EVERYTHING else FOREVER.

29. So, you think crossovers have a blind faith in Obama? to defend
him regardless? That's what I am seeing. Not rationally discussing the idea or policy itself - just
more of "leave him alone, he's great."

Richardson was my first choice too - but the issues to me are most important thing - getting health
care, getting out of Iraq, stopping torture. The man second. It just so happens I think we ended
up with a great man to push this agenda.

Like I've said before, a couple weeks ago, I came to the realization on what change means. I had
mistakenly thought it was - getting all the things we want - like the repukes have for years. But
it's not. The change is getting something done - however - watered down it becomes.

has to combine the things the Crossovers support (like pro-active Military engagement in the affairs of other countries) with the things that other factions support and most especially with what Liberals such as myself want. My personal experience shows me that pursuing opposite intents at the same time results in nullity. How is President Obama going to pursue a "Strong" position in the World, so no one will f- with us, or try to get even for some of the killing "we" have done, and at the same time govern our inernational relationships with Peace? One or BOTH of those ends are going to come up short and I suspect it's going to be the anti-War people who will be most disappointed. And when that happens, it will look eminently and completely reasonable. Everyone will say it is "pragmatic" common sense and nothing will actually Change, except for the worse.

53. I see what you are saying. I think other "X" factors to deal with are :
1) The cautious ones. Not necessarily pro-military - but those who have bought into the arguement that Bush and others have
spouted for years - that the place will turn into an inferno if we leave - and if we tell the "enemy" when we are leaving
all hell will break loose.

2) Those who benefit financially. I don't think we have any idea of the magnitude of this group. But, I know, from reading
the last Brookings assessment of Iraq that peace talks among rival groups were suspended because of a "lack of funds" - This
astounded me given all the money being squandered and spent - and no one ever picked up on it. It proves there is an
unknown contingency that did not and probably does not want this gravy train to end.

Personally, I think Obama decided to work within the framework of the Iraqi-US agreement. Path of least resistance - because
you can merely say we are getting out because the Iraqis want us out.

That is EXACTLY what I see happening here. No matter how I couch a criticism - phrasing it as "I voted for Obama, I worked on his campaign but I am _______________" I get told to take a back seat and quit whining. Infantilizing my preoccupation with actual CHANGE... not just a hollow cliche.

I have seen well know DUers, who never would have settled for the mediocrity we are seeing now, proclaiming Obama as the second coming of Christ. They are taking a "wait and see" attitude and are unwilling to entertain or engage in any scrutiny of Obama's centrist-right leaning choices.

Of course I have been told that I am not giving him a chance... when of course I am giving him as much of a chance as I possibly can - I did whatever I could to get him elected didn't I? Is it too much to ask that the left side of the Democratic party be represented? The Republicans are certainly being represented and it seems that coddling their little feelings is far more important than being true to a central issue of a campaign platform and that was running as an ANTI-WAR candidate.

Anti war my ass. I see more of the same coming down the river. Keep an unpopular occupation burning bright and ramp up a war in Afghanistan. Far more hawkish than was represented.

Oh - and paleeze... I do not need to be told to be happy that Bush is gone. Duh. But I also wanted to get as far away from his ridiculous policies as possible - Not cling to them.

All you say is so true. It is such a strange phenomenon here - a contingency whose only sole purpose seems
to be to tell people they are wrong. To tell people not to criticize O. Seems very fishy to me. Disagree,
state your reason, fine. But, the immediate, blanket "shut-up"?

Obama pretty much said it himself yesterday with his announcement of Daschle. The far left is out.

So, once again, we find ourselves in the minority. Like when there were 16% who opposed the Afghan invasion
after 9-11. Oh, Obama will definitely be better than McCain by a zillion percent - but the realization
that the things I most care about will be watered down to the point I might not recognize the result has
surely taken away from my initial excitement...

19. I appreciate the rabid press (like today) when the need to find answers arises.
I don't fault the press in their inquires today into gathering all the facts about Obama's office and its relationships with Blogo - I believe Obama.

However, it's the selective fury of the press. Where were the rabid new hounds in 2002 and 2003 in the build up to an idiotic war?

That's what pisses me off. The selective interest in news and answers.

Jim Jones pro war. Gates more of the same. Clinton voted for the IWR has expressed interest in destroying Iran etc. Sure liberals say that it's too early to come down on Obama over these picks but in my mind it is never to early to save one more innocent life in Iraq and Afghanistan.
