Obama sets record for top Hispanics

By MIKE ALLEN | 12/16/08 11:59 AM EST

President-elect Obama has already broken White House records for the number of top Hispanic officials, and is expected to name two more in the next day or two, according to transition officials.

“Based on what I can cull from records, we have more Hispanics in senior positions in this White House than under either President Bush or President Clinton,” incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said in an interview.

“Diversity wasn’t the driving force here," Emanuel added. "I’m proud of the fact that it is a diverse staff. But most importantly, the quality is of a single standard. We wanted to make sure that we got a great staff of seasoned people — both on the policy front and on the political front — who know their stuff.”

Emanuel said that was achieved partly by drawing from a combination of the campaign, Capitol Hill and policy-development organizations.

5. Well I'm hispanic, and boo hoo to them
I despise ethnic based groups. Some, not all, of these groups were demanding that Alberto "Torture Man" Gonzales be confirmed, despite many thoughtful latinos cringing at the thought. We knew he was shit then........and the stabndard reesponse was........but, but, he's latino. Fuck em.

10. Iirc, that was the Republican talking point, not the reality.
Torquemada was Junior's man, not anyone else's.

I myself was overwhelmed by how proud the Republicans were of promoting the Latino heritage that day.

lol

7. So when are we going to be "just" Americans? I will be glad to see that day!
Those who are counting are loosing the point - it just isn't white men that are in the Administration now but it is the best men and women available.

8. Ladies and gentlemen, change is already happening!!
And it just so happens that choosing the most qualified people also leads to diversity. Isn't it wonderful? That's what we dems have said for decades and now we see the proof. Thank you PE Obama.

13. I am Hispanic and happy to see Obama appointing
Hispanics to his cabinet. Having said that, what should matter most is that they are qualified first and if Obama chose them, they must be. Obama is brilliant and I would not question his choices.

The only important question I would ask OBama today if I see him would be, What about my hero Howard Dean?

I would much rather see Howard Dean being nominated for a position in his cabinet than to see a fellow Hispanic being appointed.

Having said that (again), I am Happy Obama is considering "us"

: )
