"Malia added in the interview that her father once shook hands with a kid who had come home with her, so she told him “You really don’t shake kids’ hands that much, you just wave or say hi.”

One teenager.

One 6 or younger and one toddler.

Serve 'em right!

You have my complete agreement on this. My daughter (now 27) at 10 gave me some real "moments"!!

48. I just love kids that "do their job."
I get all kinds of giggles and smiles when kids hold an adult's feet to the fire ... when they act as Nautilus and treadmill combined with a lot of soul-searching thrown in for good measure.

25. Cool thing about that pic...
is that boy can now grow up with the idea that he could someday be the POTUS- it is no longer an impossibility. As to the rest of those kids, how cool will it be for them to say that they got to shake the hand of the first African American president? This is truly a great moment in our history.

4. Those are very heartwarming pics.
What woman could resist a man who likes munchkins? It's adorable! And kids love him. I can't remember how many houses I canvassed where kids answered the door and started jumping up and down as soon as I mentioned Obama's name.

17. When we were doing GOTV on election day, some kids spotted us from the far side of
an apartment complex and just came running at us full-tilt cheering "Obama people! Obama people!" (They must have spotted the bumper stickers on our car-- the good eyesight of youth!)

I was SO happy that my husband had some Obama stickers on him. You would have thought we'd given them crisp 100 dollar bills, they were so excited.

That was one of the highlights of the day and it still puts a HUGE smile on my face thinking about it.

35. So are cats.......
When McCain/Palin folks came to my door, my kitties hid.

Obama folks? I had to chase one of the kitties off the poor gal doing door-hanging stuff; DiddyBits loved her, climbed up her leg and "nested" on her neck/hair. Of course, all my Obama yard signs had been stolen 2 days before, so when I "disengaged teh kitteh", we went to her truck and got some more!

Kitties, dogs, kids, women, men, all colors, all religions, all nationalities - I haven't seen this kind of unity ever. The first time I ever experienced anything like it was in 1960 (my daddy was a huge Kennedy supporter) and even that didn't come close.

I love this man. I think he's the best thing that ever happened the the United States of America, and I fully believe he'll prove me right.

8. I love these photo compliations you're posting Jackeens.
I don't even mind that you're emotionally manipulating me with these kid pictures. I feel the same innocent giddiness when I think about having Obama as our president. Finally, arguably after 60 years, we get the president our country deserves. A man of the people. A smart man who wants to run government like a business.

These essays are a treasure. This change in administration is a blessing in a season with damn few blessings around.

Just the way I was brought up, I guess. One of those "man things" my dad manage to instill in me, y'know? "Son, a man looks another man in the eye and shakes his hand. That's how you do it"

Am I alone here? :)

33. MY President
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 07:23 AM by northofdenali
is not too big to shake a small one's hand, or too small not to shake a hand offered in friendship and hope.

My God, he is one of the best. His face is not a "politician's" face - it's the face of humanity, humility, service, comfort and compassion. He is the very face of hope.

I haven't quit crying for joy since November 4th.

I haven't quit crying for hope since 2000 - and finally got some back in my soul in 2008.

2009 promises to be a year of hardship, hard work, hard choices - and I'll always look to that face of hope in my President. I BELIEVE AGAIN!!!

39. Kids LOVE having their hands shaken
They love being treated with respect and like an actual person. We have a problem in this country of treating kids like adults when we shouldn't, and not treating them like real people when we should. If a child is over about eight or nine years old, I always shake hands when them when I meet them for the first time. It's the same respect I give a teenager or an adult.

44. All those kids will grow up with an entirely different mindset
about who can be President than we all did. It won't seem like a big deal to them, and from that idea stems the idea they can be anything they want if they work for it. This is a huge change for our culture. We've always espoused they idea that you can be anything you want to be, but now there's someone who shown these kids that it's true.

47. I love the last one. Do you see how proud the dad is that his
child is shaking Obama's hand? He has a beautiful smile. Made me tear up just thinking of how much that means to him. I'm not black, so I can't pretend to know what he's feeling or thinking, but I imagine it's pretty powerful. The look of joy on every child's face is also powerful.

Thank you so very much for these photos. It reminds us of how far we have come as a nation. I grew up in the south, and at the time everything was segregated. Separate waiting rooms for blacks, separate schools, separate water fountains. And when Mississippi was forced to integrate, private whites-only schools popped up everywhere. I went to one of them. My parents said that I'd get a good education that way and that I couldn't get a good education in a classroom where there were only 5 white kids.

And let me tell you, I believed it. Kids generally do believe what their parents tell them, at least until they have seen enough and experienced enough to think differently.

I have a tiny bit of good news regarding that private school I went to. They now have a few black students. I'm hoping that someday the town will realize that they don't need to send their kids there at all. I'm sure that will be a long time from now, but eventually change even comes to the Mississippi Delta.
