My Message to those in the DU community Hurt by the Warren choice for Invocation issue....

I am sorry that you have been hurt by this choice. :(

As an unapologetic Obama supporter from way back, perhaps it shouldn't be me who says it,
but I can't make anyone else do it....so this is the best that I can do.

I have a different way of looking at it, I will admit...however, whatever I might think,
has nothing to do with the pain this announcement has made you feel.

Some folks have called me names today, and I want them to know that I'm not holding any grudge,
as I don't know many here on a personal basis, and therefore will not take any of that personally.

So again, I'm sorry if this choice of invocator to the inaugural is hurtful, or offensive, or insulting, or infuriating....as I wanted all of us to celebrate the occasion together, as many of us
have been on this board fighting for some of the same things for so long.

That is all.

1. It is a flat out offensive choice
Not only to GLBTs, but to women, to choice activists, and to those of us who value science. Period.

3. I only stated that whomever was hurt by this choice......
and this is not limited to anyone based on anything other than that.
Also, I added the word offensive to my description of possible emotions
the choice emoted.

It's very sad.

7. Bluebear, don't feel discouraged.
Let the inclusion of Rev. James Lowery, the Gay and Lesbian Band Association, and the numerous openly gay members appointed to the transition team and the administration serve as your invitation.

E-mail change.gov and let them know your feelings, but I hope you'll see it as nothing more than an ill-thought out (in your opinion) program rather than a spiteful shun of gays.

As a bisexual, I'm no Warren fan, but I tend to see the bigger picture with having Lowery, a gay marriage supporter, giving the benediction. I see this as the most open, diverse inauguration in history (with the possible exception of Andrew Jackson's). Let your ability to write or call the Obama transition team and complain about Rick Warren be testimony to that fact.

*hugs*

9. Yep. I was already going to be out of the country during the inauguration
At first I was kind of thinking it was bad timing, but now I'm not sure I want to watch.

8. I could see the hurt on this board today.
I reacted differently, but that doesn't invalidate
what other people felt.

There were a lot of posters that felt this way,
and it is very real.

Some have waited 200 years for January 20th.

Some are now not looking forward to it today, although they were yesterday.

I know that Obama will make policies that will alleviate some of that pain,
but that is in the future and has not happened,
and so until then, that hurt is there.

17. I'm going to bed....
I've tried to encourage people and I've sent a note to change.gov myself...but now we have impeach threads going and the man hasn't been sworn in...name calling and other shit.

People are being sucked in by folks that probably aren't even upset by warren but just want to keep the fights going.

I feel bad for everybody hurt today and the one's just keeping shit going should be ashamed of themselves.

Good nite!

20. Before today I had no idea..
who Rick Warren is, nor did I know what an invocation is. After reading through some of the posts I posted on several locations at the Change.Gov site, and sent emails to the members of the Congressional Inauguration Committee. Now, I'm done. There is no compromise that will be acceptable. And there is nothing that will unring the bell. It was a bad choice, and it will have consequences as all bad choices do.

31. For what it's worth FrenchieCat, I'm not angry with you or anyone else here...
I'm angry with Team Obama for AGAIN bringing out an anti-gay douchebag (though this time, for extra douchiness, this one also hates himself some Jews, Catholics, non-Evangelical Christians and women) to speak on its behalf with its blessing. And if like McClurkin before him, Warren predictably uses the platform given him to make a dig at any of the aforementioned groups, however subtle it may be, rest assured I and others will be outraged again. We fucking said it would happen with McClurkin and it did. Rev. Rick Warren is smarter, but is he smart enough NOT to do as McClurkin did? I'm not holding my breath...

is that Warren will no longer be seen as a "moderate" by so many.
Perhaps shining the light on him may end up being a good thing in the end.

CNN was quite harsh on him today when reporting on the controversy. Yet when he was on Larry King during the GE, he was heralded as this great middle of the road preacher with a best selling book which had sold 100 million copies. Churches all over America, and I mean just about "all" have had prayer groups studying his book and everything! And there was a Times cover that he was featured on, again, not too long ago.

Sometimes unintended consequences have some rewards....although I still understand why many
would have a problem with him.

29. I appreciate your effort to be supportive instead of combative or argumentative
as past discussions over Donnie McClurkin's inclusion into the Obama rallies in the South were not taken in the same "everyone's views count" mentality.

I appreciate your sentiment. I also state, how can anyone not be DEEPLY offended by Obama allowing the invocation for his inauguration to, at this time, be none other than a man who has accused Gays of being similar to pedophiles and those who commit incest - and who is against a woman's right to choose, and against a woman's right to preach or simply have some form of true leadership in a church setting - Warren is quite the 1800's kinda guy! Great choice.
