17. It occurred to me that Warren's prayer may have been a "fuck you"
maybe to Obama, maybe to those who criticized his choice. But it so obviously ran against the inclusive message on which Obama ran, that I just can't think Warren is this clueless. I think he was letting Obama know that he doesn't agree with his message.

What a mistake on Obama's part.

21. Rhyming preaching like that is an African American preaching style.
That was one of the remarkable things about his prayer. He combined interesting imagery, prophetic speech, and a variety of rhetorical styles. And that phrase was one in a list of things that will happen when the world becomes what it can be..as Christians say "when the kingdom comes". He worked on that prayer, and it showed.

It was a wonderful prayer.

It was unfair and wrong to infer that the ills of the world fall squarely on the shoulders of whites.

Which is why it was a bullshit prayer.

The people in charge need to take responsibility for the ills of the world. In this country, that means whites.

Which is why they don't deserve this kind of bullshit disrespect.

You know for damn sure that if a white reverend had said "blacks need to do what's right", there would have been an uproar about what a bigot he was.

The statement Lowery made was bigoted and uncalled for on such a day as today. Simple as that.

57. It would seem to me that you would be more outraged by the continued hatred of blacks by so many.
Perhaps you have not been prejudiced against Blacks, but you unfortunately do not reflect the thinking of a significant portion of our culture. I was born and raised in Mississippi and have many relatives that live in the deep South. Sadly, I have to admit that far too many of them cling to their prejudiced thinking of White superiority and the inferiority of Blacks. Just remember this one fact. Until the passage of the civil rights legislation by the Johnson administration the South was solidly Democratic. As Johnson remarked upon his signing it, the South would be lost to Democrats for generations to come. Within one election cycle nearly all the Democrats were defeated by Republicans. I remember Lott and his campaign speeches in which he spewed all the code words just as Reagan did when he opened his campaign in the South. The Republican Party is the party of the Southern racists and far too many are just as intolerant as they were in the 50's and 60's.

If 'whites' didn't do 'what's right', then we'd still have slavery in this country.

I've already heard the local conservative radio hosts making a big deal about it. They're attacking Obama for it as if he said it. They, of course, are looking for any reason to get their listeners fired up and resistant to Obama. Portraying him as an angry black guy will do it, even if he's not responsible for what some preacher says in a prayer. They're trying to hang this around Obama's neck just like they hung Wright around his neck.

And if you see Lowery (or, by extension, Obama) as "angry" in any way, you were watching an inauguration in some bizarro parallel universe.

But Rick Warren was just fine, right?

Good lord, this place never fails to astonish me.

70. Nice assumption...
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 11:40 AM by TTUBatfan2008
NOT.

I can't stand Rick Warren. He's a homophobe asshole and I wish Obama had not invited him to the Inauguration. And no, I didn't "see" any of the Inauguration. I was listening to it over an Internet audio stream. Lowery's comment did not personally offend me, but I do recognize it as a controversial one. And you need to wake the fuck up if you think I see Obama as angry. I've been on here trying to tell people to stop insisting that we investigate the Bush administration because I believe Obama's post-partisan message is important. Obama seems to be one of the nicest, most genuine politicians you could ever meet. I don't know much about Lowery, but I thought his prayer was very good. I was happy that Obama let him have the "last word" compared to Rick Warren. Lowery doesn't strike me as angry, but that is how the right wingers are portraying it and I'm sick of the unfair attacks. As for being "angry," I defended Wright for being angry because he has a right to be as angry as he wants. He went through segregation and I don't think anyone should tell him how to feel on such matters.

65. It means we haven't come as far as we thought we had
This race has by no means been an easy ride. Obama was not always treated respectfully, even by members of his own party. He clawed his way to the presidency in spite of comments like Biden's that he's "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy" and Bill Clinton's insinuation that frontrunner Obama would make a great VP running mate for his wife.

So even as whites think they are being progressive enough, Lowery is astute enough to point out that we're not quite there yet. Dr. King's dream is still out there waiting for us, and it's up to whites to get the hell out the way.

There is an old saying of the freedmen after the Civil War that goes like this:

If you’re brown, stick around
If you’re yellow, you’re mellow
But if you’re black, get back"

Warren's sounded theatrical and forced. Too effusive. He doesn't know how to build the energy of a speech as Lowery does, and did.

I've got to wonder why Warren is as popular a preacher as he is. Easy audiences, I suspect.

58. Read the replies that have been posted.
Reply after reply uses racist language condemning him. Their remarks calling him a nigger only prove the point that racism is alive and well in the hearts of far too many Americans. Some people would like to believe that it is all behind us now that we have elected a man of mixed ancestry. It was a major achievement but it hardly erases the fact that a significant portion of our citizens are prejudiced.

63. Best Moment in Inaugural History
For me it was one of the better moments in inaugural history. It had love, reverence, swagger and so much more. It said what went unsaid up until the point that he spoke his words. Not at one time in inaugural history did someone address race as poetically and boldly. It wasn't waved in anyone's face like the righteous finger. However, the message was clear, forward and endearing.
