6. Oh ... okay. I missed that. Luckily.
I can't even take a few minutes of prayer every several years ... I think I would puke if I had to sit in a stupid church for any length of time.

7. Rhyming speech like that is a traditional African American preaching
style. Dr. King even used it from time to time.

Get a clue.

8. Um -- Yeah, DUH!!
I know that.

I still thought it was hilarious. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Jesus, pull the stick out of your butt.

15. I was happy Obama included non-believers in his speech.
Meanwhile though, there were l-o-t-s of prayers. Too many for my taste.

9. Maybe 90% of DU does not and they are damn proud of not having one.
Unfortunately, they are not very gracious about it.

10. Its not about having a religion or not having one. Its about separating religion from Government

11. Hard to get religious types to understand that.
I'm talking much more about Freepers, before anyone here throws something at me.

12. But it's not all the same religion...
...so why not just skip all the damned praying instead of either offending at lot of people by being too faith-specific, or offending fewer (but still some) by using watered-down generic prayers? Why not honor the secular spirit of the Constitution?

I hope I can manage to live to see the day when a President of the United States can give a major speech that doesn't end in "God bless the United States of America", but it might be too much to hope for, since I'll probably have to be 150 years old to get my chance.

14. WRONG - A belief in higher power does not = "a religion"
Just because people are spiritual does not mean they support the superstitions, costumes and bullshit that are religion. Plenty of people who are in organized religions are not all that spiritual.

Spirituality does not equal religion.

20. No but those I know....
who are spiritual beings are far more tolerant than either the religious, or the non-religious. After all, we're all the same, and what we see in others is inherent in us all. And there are many who practice a religious faith that are spiritual. I can not think of a more spiritual human being..through his words and his actions, than Martin Luther King.

21. Most people don't rationalize belief.

Especially in such a convoluted, antagonistic way.

They either do, or don't.

The vast majority do.

Oh, and nearly 80% of Americans are Christian. Like Obama.

13. Our new President is a Christian.
The prayers will mean a lot to Obama and his family, so it is alright with me. He does mentions the non-believers often. We should give him credit for that. He is inclusive of everyone.

18. I'd rather hear another prayer than Feinstein. Her popping up
throughout the process was irritating to me. I feel terrible saying that, it's less than gracious of me but I was bugged by her fit over not being consulted over Obama's cabinet appointment prior to hitting the press (of whom - or which post I can't remember, I was so annoyed at her tantrum!).

I am ready for her to stop now...

The benediction was awesome.

As was Aretha - which felt like so gospel and prayer-like to me - I loved both!

Warren looked like he was trying to put on an act of emotion, it did not seem sincere at all. Reminded me of a kid trying to get him or herself to cry to gain attention. His words weren't offensive, I didn't think, but his superficial act was, in my view.

I didn't expect to like him, and he lived up to my expectations... but he didn't bug me as much as Feinstein because he only spoke once.

Now I feel guilty and hypocritical for saying such things on such a positive day. It's honest, but it's rude.
