Human Rights Campaign Statement on Gillibrand’s Appointment as Senator
WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, issued a statement today on the appointment of Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) by Gov. David Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who resigned as the state’s junior senator this week.

“Governor Paterson’s pick of Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand’s is a step forward for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as she brings with her a strong record of support and understanding,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Gillibrand has already spoken out in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples; hate crimes protection legislation covering our entire community; fully inclusive employment non-discrimination legislation, and the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’. As we advance pro-equality legislation in the 111th Congress, we look forward to Senator Gillibrand’s support and votes.”

3. Yes, this is all very convenient about a woman who only went so far as "civil unions"
earlier. It's Clintonian ... DLCers like Schumer have their OPERATIVES every damn where and "right on cue." :eyes:

can't go all the way for LGBTs unless she's elected statewide.

10. Good ol Bareback Andy.
Wasn't he a log cabin'er before? And no has "seen the light". Miss Thang has a LOT of room to talk when it comes to switching postions. But enought about his sex life.

13. Unlike, say, Obama's support for full Marriage Rights.
Or ... um... is there ANY sitting Senator who's come out for full marriage rights?

But Gillibrand has the same position as Obama, and it's a Clinton/Schumer scheme. :eyes:

15. seriously, this woman was anti-gay like just yesterday. No Medicaid for AIDS patients, etc.
She virulently opposed even the smallest concessions for equal treatment for simple stuff like legal rights and healthcare.

What a complete, overnight turn around - I don't get it.

19. She was never 'anti-gay.'
For several of those issues, HRC was crticizing her not for opposing them, but for failing to co-sponsor them.

Not the same thing.

22. Seriously, what the hell are you talking about? That isn't even remotely true.
There are interviews from BEFORE her selection in which she unambiguously states her support of equal rights. Her stated positions and votes completely contradict you. But don't mind me, I'm just a constituent who has been following her career closely for more than two days. :boring:
