1. hahaha
the GOP just wants us to look bad. And who was it that Caroline Kennedy compared to her father? It was not John McCain.

Kennedy risked his life in WWII to defeat the fascists, not to become one.

We say the same about Lincoln. Only, in our case I think it's true.

8. They're probably pissed about all of the Obama-Lincoln references, and
that's why they've dug up Kennedy's carcass and are waving it like a dusty flag.

Truly pathetic!

16. Yep. They can't play the race card, so they're trying out the "Rewriting History" card.
They apparently never learned the Big Lesson: It's the WINNERS who write the history books--not the losers!

27. There is a huge difference with this argument, however.
The Democratic Party of the 60s was actually far more liberal than the current Democratic Party. Remember, it was still very tied to the New Deal and Kennedy, whether he admitted it or not, was a New Deal Democrat. Nearly every Democrat back then, outside the libertarians in the west, were FDR Democrats.

The Republican Party under Lincoln is not even the same as the Republican Party today. But to be fair, neither of the major parties are similar to their 1860s counterparts. The issues back then were so far and away different from today, that you really don't get a clear idea of where he would fit.

Kennedy, though? He's still pretty close to the modern part of the modern Democratic Party.

7. Principles like...
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 05:01 PM by silverweb
...liberalism?

Freepers are beyond stupid, beyond ignorant, beyond illogical. It amazes me that they have enough functional brain cells to keep breathing.

Yes, here's one of Kennedy's most famous statements on principles that would surely mean he'd "have to change parties" ...

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then ... we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." (September 14, 1960)

hahahahaha

30. well, the republican party has changed quite a bit.
even lincoln would not be considered republican if measured by today's standards. what amazes me the most about the republican party is that they talk about government being too big and individual states rights, and yet they want to ban gay marriage and tell people whether they can have the choice of whether to have kids or not and they want to decide whether i live on a feeding tube or not. they are such a contradiction!!

40. They support big government alright...
It's just a different brand of big government than the Democratic version. They've got no problem with the government spying on citizens in our libraries in the name of "national security" and they've got no problem with the government telling people what they can and can't do in their own lives when it comes to marriage or abortion, but they've got a huge problem with supposed big government spending on social programs. They don't mind big government spending on corporate tax cuts, however. They're hypocrites, plain and simple. The Libertarians are far more true to their own beliefs than the so-called "small government" Republicans. Libertarians want the government to leave everyone alone and not waste our tax dollars. That's basically how I approach things, which is why I'm against the stimulus but also against the ridiculous bans on abortion or gay marriage that Republicans are peddling.
