3. I admire and respect people, but I do not worship heroes.
There are millions of heroes in this country. They are little people, both men and women, who struggle anonymously through their lives with little or no recognition of how they strive to make a better world in their own small ways.

24. THANK YOU
Your the first person I've heard say that today, and that's exactly how I feel. I respect and admire Obama, but I think worship is a bit of a stretch.

16. we can only hope
We can only hope that this does not get out to the public too much, and that they do not come to associate support for the new administration as some sort of fan club of groupies. Nothing is more demeaning to the President, and more destructive to the potential success of the new administration.

It does the President no favors to reduce him to an object of adulation, but I fear that some do not care. They are concerned with their own emotional needs, and will continue use the President for their own selfish purposes - to feel like they are on the winning team, and to beat up on all who are deemed to be outside of the inner circle. The price we are paying for the self-indulgence of the few is far too high, and we can ill afford it now.

The wild comparisons to Lincoln do both men a great disservice. They trivialize Lincoln, and place a tremendous burden on the current President. At this point in his administration Lincoln himself was not yet Lincoln. Strange that we are told that it is far too early to comment on current events related to the administration, and should refrain from expressing any critical analysis, but yet it is not too early to compare the President to Lincoln - an assessment that is clearly absurdly premature.

26. the "fun"
Glad you mentioned that. It is the sort of "fun" that has a very vicious and hostile edge to it, and that comes at the expense of others. The fact that people see it as fun makes it even more disturbing, and more important to talk about, in my view.

Yes, I do think that people are enjoying it.

27. I went with Ewing...ET always scared me as a kid, he looked like a talking turd.
As for the rest...I never saw James Dean as a hero by any stretch of the imagination. Dean reminded me more of Dawson (from Dawson's Creek) with a possible drug problem. Donny Osmond isn't intelligent enough. Casanova...came close but no cigar since Obama has men in his corner as well. Marvin Gaye...nope, didn't he try to beat his father up, was on drugs and had IRS problems?! Then it's an adamant NO. Dennis Rodman...won't even bother commenting. Einstein...no. Superman, I'd say close but he's not invincible and I still worry for him. Abraham Lincoln could fit, if I knew more about him. However, I was raised on Dallas and I do know Ewing. So Ewing wins out.

64. I believe in heroes but I don't believe in worshiping them.
This doesn't mean I can't admire, respect, praise or in my own humble way fantasize about emulating them.

I also believe anyone who tells you heroes don't exist are living in a severe state of cynical denial.

In conclusion, I do believe our society sometimes goes overboard in attaching the hero label thus demeaning the word, to acts that may be, courageous, noteworthy or admirable but don't rise to a heroic level.
