Obama was very smart to keep the tax increase for the rich off of the stimulus bill
The stimulus had to pass and pass quickly. Including the taxcut repeal for the wealthy in that bill would have killed it. The 3 Republicans in the Senate who voted for the bill would not have been on board, and a good many DLCers in the House would have voted no as well.

Political capital has to be used sparingly and when the time is right.
