By CQ Staff
President Obama has stolen two more from Capitol Hill — and he was shrewd about it.
With his nomination of Demetrios Marantis for deputy U.S. Trade Representative and Ronald H. Weich for assistant attorney general for legislative affairs, the president seems to be trying to make it awfully hard for Democratic leaders to challenge his policies on a range of issues, from economics to anti-terrorism matters.
Marantis, for example, is currently the chief international trade counsel for the Senate Finance Committee, where he advises Chairman Max Baucus , D-Mont., and other members on trade and economic issues.
Weich, meanwhile, is chief counsel to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev. He advises the Democratic leader on everything from anti-terror policies to institutional legal issues and judicial nominations.
The nominations of Marantis and Weich are the latest in what appears to be an effort by Obama to pepper his administration with as many lawmakers and top congressional staffers as possible. So far he has picked six members of Congress — including Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. — for Cabinet-level or White House posts. At least a half dozen congressional aides have also been nominated to other executive office or high-level posts subject to confirmation by the Senate.
