ATLANTA -- Civil rights pioneer and King associate the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery apparently fell down Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, churchgoers said.
Lowery was there to serve as the keynote speaker for a special 11 a.m. service marking the church's 123rd anniversary.
One churchgoer told Channel 2 Action News reporter Anissa Centers that Lowery, 87, did not appear to be in any distress. There are also conflicting reports about whether Lowery passed out.
An Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department representative told Channel 2 Action News that crews responded to the call, and that Lowery was alert, conscious and breathing.
The representative said Lowery was treated by paramedics of another agency.
Lowery delivered the benediction at President Barack Obama's inaugural swearing-in.
Hailed as the dean of the civil rights movement, Lowery co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference along with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
