DU, lock and load, you are not going to believe the latest meme coming from the right
Just got back from a meeting, where I keep my political opinions to myself since I work with the public.

But at this meeting was a local power player for the GOP.

Grab a strong drink and sit down you are just not going to believe this one.

GOP'er at meeting, states in an aside to the room, that he and others would feel more inclined to support Obama if he would make a one term pledge.

Get this, because of the economic crisis, only someone who pledged to just one term could get the confidence of the country to do the hard work needed to get us back on course.

After almost spewing my coffee, I just could not keep my mouth shut. I looked at this guy, and told him apparently the blood was no longer going to his brain. As if Democrats would be so damn stupid to take the one great movement we have had in the last 15 years and throw it away.

Not only would the support for Obama be that much stronger in 2012, but we are taking over the senate with an unstoppable 61 seats.

Needless to say, not much more was said on politics at that meeting.

They really do know they are in trouble.

2. Did you remind him that Republicans are pathological liars
and that you can't believe a word they say -- so you can't count on their support?

3. I'm tickled to death that they're focusing on such a pointless goal.
Seriously, if that's where they want to put their energy, more power to them.

Because it ain't gonna happen!

5. The thing is... I almost feel like Obama sort of said that already, himself
I can't recall which speech it was, perhaps inauguration? but he said something like, "...and if we can't get it going in 4 years, you'll have a new President" - I gasped when he said that because my immediate take was that he set the bar high for himself and if he couldn't do what he wanted in 4 years, then he'd admit failure and move on.

That's how I took it anyway.

Granted, that's not what your repuke guy was saying, but effectively it sounds the same.

27. I took that remark to mean that he thought if he doesn't make progress
that someone else could be elected, not that he would give up. I guess it's pretty much up to interpretation.

8. "support Obama if he would make a one term pledge."
Edited on Mon Mar-23-09 04:17 PM by depakid
The announcement today to go along to get along with insolvent banks and hedge funds may well end up the equivalent of such a pledge.

We shall see.

and the FDIC to bank stockholders and hedge funds- Obama stands a good chance of being a one term president.

As I said, we shall see.

22. Regardless of what the some of the acolytes want to believe- Obama's presidency will be judged on
the state of the economy over the next several years- to which this plan will a key component.

Of course Obama is going to be judged on the economy. He'll be judged on everything, he's the freaking president. You don't think we realize that? However, I'm not going to freak out or get all depressed or predict or project or even hint at what will happen in three years.

Three years is a lot of time. Even if the economy tanks even worse and Obama's approval ratings plummet this year, he still has a ton of time to rebound.

Just ask Clinton, who was down in the 30s in terms of approval ratings in the summer of 1993.

So don't give me your pious political rhetoric, I get it. But right now, Obama's ratings are better than either Clinton's or Bush's were at this point in their first term, which is remarkable, since he's faced far tougher situations than either of them.

Why am I not surprised? I'd be more inclined to support the GOP if they all killed themselves. There, that's better.

16. Hmmm. Let's check out that shoe on the other foot...
So why weren't they saying THIS about Bush? "... because of the 9/11 crisis, only someone who pledged to just one term could get the confidence of the country to do the hard work needed to get us back on course."

Same logic ought to apply in either case.

Either they really mean it or they don't really mean it. I suspect they don't really mean it.
