1. Nice...
This isn't Broadway... I want him to get the words right, not impress me with his memorization skills.

Anyone know if the responses to questions last night were on the prompter, or if it was just the opening statement?

By the way, go into most churches, and you'll find that the preacher has notes or is using the Bible. Does that undermine their credibility?

2. Last night...
...Obama used the teleprompter or had one on for his opening statement. If anyone was paying attention, he was not during the rest of the press conference...

3. You might also want to direct their attention to this:
When Bush addressed the UN General Assembly today, the White House inadvertently showed exactly how - with a phonetic pronunciation guide on the teleprompter to get him past troublesome names of countries and world leaders.

The White House was left scrambling to explain after a marked-up draft of Bush's speech popped up briefly on the UN website as he delivered his remarks, giving a rare glimpse of the special guidance he gets for major addresses.

It included phonetic spellings for French President Nicolas Sarkozy (sar-KO-zee), a friend, and Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe (moo-GAH-bee), a target of US human rights criticism.

Pronunciations were also provided for Kyrgyzstan (KEYR-geez-stan), Mauritania (moor-EH-tain-ee-a) and the Zimbabwe capital Harare (hah-RAR-ray).

4. I surprised they didn't have to prompt Bush with cartoons so he would stay focused.

5. I don't think prompters like that one existed over 20 years ago.
I could be wrong. I'm not saying so to disagree ... there's nothing inappropriate about the use of a teleprompter. Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address out by hand for reading from the podium ... same difference just the benefit of modern technology. But before you run wild with that Reagan pic, make sure its not a chop cuz I don't think teleprompters like that existed between 1980 and 1988.

6. Here's a picture from his 1983 SOTU address. It looks like there
is a teleprompter of that type mounted on each side of the podium.

8. Hah! Yeah I've been looking for other pics too! I was wrong.
I'm really surprised. I'm 41 years old and I never would've guessed they had 'transparent screen' teleprompters like that in use over 20 years ago. I went looking and found several other photos too.

Anyway, my suspicion about that was wrong. Doesn't make a hill of beans difference to me whether Reagan used one or not, just like I don't care if Pres. Obama uses one or not. But yeah for those who are trying to make something of it, useful pic.

13. They're not that high tech, they just reflect a monitor image from below
Note the 45 degree angle.

The original Space Invaders used the same technology.

10. Reagan was the first President to use the computer based teleprompter
The original teleprompters were invented in the 1950s.

15. Reagan was the first audio-animatronic president
St. Ronnie didn't die -- they just moved him to the "Hall of Presidents" in Disney World. Ronnie was actually President ver. 2.0. The beta version can be found on Firesign Theater's "I Think We're All Bozos on This Bus."

Bush was a defective model that had been consigned to the scrap pile, where the neo-cons found it, gave it a new coat of paint and then had it appointed President by the Supreme Court.

16. Reagan was like 100 years old in1983
He needed that teleprompter on account of that, don't ya think?

Look at his 1964 RNC speech and you'll realize Reagan was sharp as hell in his prime.

Obama OTOH, stutters and pauses an inordinate amount of time when he speaks extemporaneously. That's a fact. Hence, the exclusive teleprompter usage.

17. Bullshit. What does age have to do with teleprompter use?
Furthermore, Who cares if a President uses a teleprompter or note cards? I'd rather they spend their time on other issues and not memorizing speeches.

Seriously, you should avoid using the phrase "that's a fact" when you're talking out your ass.

20. Obama sounded sharp last night. No stuttering
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 09:23 PM by creeksneakers2
Actually, he almost never stutters. The right wing has made a point of microscoping Obama sentences. There are "ahs" between words. That's how everybody talks when they don't have a prepared text or a memorized talking point. Check out a tape of anybody and see.

Added: This is the first thing I brought up. Its This Week with George Stephanopoulus. Kent Conrad goes "ah". Susan Collins doesn't. Mike Pence, the GOP Caucus Chairman, says "ah" more often than Obama does.

Its such a common thing that nobody notices it.

21. "it's a fact." i always loved that.
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 09:34 PM by asphalt.jungle
Whether a speaker users a teleprompter or looks down to read from his prepared remarks, it's still not speaking on the fly. I know which one plays better on TV though. He spent 95% of the time in both prime time press conferences speaking on the fly answering questions without prepared notes or a teleprompter, so all this attention to prepared marks shows the idiocy of some people right now.

And it's also a fact that you don't know what stuttering is. The president like many public speakers uses what's called hesitation markers, the use of uhm and uh. Click on the link you might learn something, the book is called Power and politeness in action By Miriam A. Loche.

Since the time of Washington and Lincoln. LOL!

While defending domestic wiretapping, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Monday, "President Washington, President Lincoln, President Wilson, President Roosevelt have all authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader scale."

With early technology of electronic surveillance in the 1700's they just may have had them and we didn't see them.
They may have had Blueberries for all we know.
