The Religious Dimensions of the Torture Debate

April 29, 2009

Amid intense public debate over the use of torture against suspected terrorists, an analysis by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life of a new survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press illustrates differences in the views of four major religious traditions in the U.S. about whether torture of suspected terrorists can be justified. Differences in opinion on this issue also are apparent based on frequency of attendance at religious services.

We may never know the attitudes regarding torture for the nation's 150,000+ Sikhs. :)

Of course, these are the predominant religious affiliations in America today.

I imagine it would be very difficult to survey collect data for other types of believers. It's most interesting (in my view) to compare traditional church-goers versus the unaffiliated. And these findings are very telling but not surprising.

11. Affiliations yes but not really distinct religions
What I see are three flavors of the same religion versus one 'unaffiliated' omnibus category.
I'd also be interested in seeing the differences in attitude/opinion between true religions...
Christians. Jews. Hindus. Muslims. Buddhists. Atheists. Wikkans. Etc etc
And yes 150,000 Sikhs. : - )))

9. In America? Yes.
Those are, unless I recall wrongly, the four biggest religious affiliations in America.

3. That figures.
Common sense and decency decreases as religiosity increases.

We've known this.

14. Too many "refused to answer"

They should have been roughed up at least a little.
