While some DUers like to paint Obama as some sort of fundie, he blows of Prayer Day
And real fundies take their shots:

Obama to be prayer day no-show
President to sign proclamation, observe privately

By Julia Duin (Contact) | Wednesday, May 6, 2009

-snip-
Shirley Dobson, chairwoman of the National Day of Prayer Committee, said the group was "disappointed in the lack of participation by the Obama administration."

"At this time in our country's history, we would hope our president would recognize more fully the importance of prayer," said Mrs. Dobson, who occupied a prominent seat in the front row for the ceremonies during the Bush administration.
-snip-

"For those of us who have our doubts about Obama's faith, no, we did not expect him to have the service," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. "But as president, he should put his own lack of faith aside and live up to the office."

Referencing a remark the president made at a recent press conference in Turkey that Americans "do not consider ourselves a Christian nation," she added: "That was projecting his own beliefs, but not reflecting what the majority of Americans feel. It's almost like Obama is trying to remake America into his own image. This is not a rejection of Shirley Dobson; it's a rejection of the concept that America is a spiritual nation and its foundation is Judeo-Christian."

1. Surely no one on
DU would have be so ignorant as to try and portray President Obama as a "fundie"?

3. Fuckin' nutbag witless jackasses - thank God for Obama being willing to say "no" to their idiocy
Finally, we have a president who's willing to stop playing the whackjob's games.

I like how he's standing up for sensibility, decency, and thoughtfulness.

And Mrs. Dobson is an evil fucking assclown if she feels the need to call Obama a man of "lack of faith". I think Obama's faith is deeper, and means more to him, than it has to any president in a long, long time.

Mrs. Dobson is part of an evil heretical faux-Christian money-hungry profit center that use Jesus to pile up tons of money for her family's own use.

8. Live up to the office???

He should put his "lack of faith" aside and live up to the office....I didn't' think Roberts screwed up the oath THAT badly that he left out the part saying the president is Pastor in Chief!!!!

Excuse me, Ms. Dobson.....there is this little thing in the Constitution....remember that....which outlines a SEPARATION of church and state. While a prayer breakfast is not "making a law", it certainly is not a requirement of the office, either.

I am a person with a very strong religious faith...It is MY faith....Not the president's and not Ms. Dobsons......

Grrrrr!

4. I am sick of sucking up to the religious
I will go to church when and if I want, I will pray when and if I want and when I think it is appropriate. Other then that I don't care what anyone thinks.

and another subtle but important reversal of the last eight years.

7. President Obama is a far better Christian than Shirley Dobson. He
pays attention to Christ's admonishment to pray quietly and IN PRIVATE, rather than making a public spectacle of oneself for the TV cameras.

I wonder when - if - we'll have a president with that much courage and wisdom.

10. "Lack of faith"?
Obama's more religious than Bush--he's probably the most genuinely religious guy we've had since Jimmy Carter.

And "Concerned Women for America" sounds like a professional outfit of Internet trolls.

11. I don't know if anyone can ever know this.
I'll bet some of the most publicly religious people internally think religion is really a crock of manure, but just "pretend" very well for political purposes. Who knows what people really think/believe. It's political suicide to come out and say, "You know, this faith stuff is a bunch of mythology."

...Pete Stark being the notable and laudable exception (although of course he didn't use those words).

13. Actually he just didn't make it a 3-ring circus like his predecessor.
It's bizarre that he is obligated to sign a declaration of Prayer Day, though. I heard about this separation of church and state thingy.

14. So he decided not to show up
and the Christian initiative is to find a newspaper and bash him for that.....:wow:

how religious of them, and they wonder why people are constantly questioning their
faith.

These people IMO are not true Christians, they are posing as one, they are more focused
on money more than anything else. They are probably pissed because of revenue that would
have benefited individuals, so they can continue their lavish lifestyles.

19. Gotta love a President who
is willing to pray in private. I think that was suggested by someone named Jesus who did happen to have a few very good ideas.
