Haley Barbour: Obama a snake charmer

By ANDREW GLASS | 5/20/09 1:14 PM EDT Text Size:

Gov. Haley Barbour (R-Miss.) predicted Wednesday that despite his current popularity in the polls, President Barack Obama will eventually suffer the same reversal of political fortune that befell President Bill Clinton in 1994.

“What they have in common is that everything for them is political. They wage a perpetual campaign. They are both extraordinary politicians. Either one of them could charm the skin off a snake,” Barbour told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.

Barbour, who was handily reelected to a second term in 2007, served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997. Barbour linked Clinton’s unpopular efforts to raise taxes and to reform health policy in 1993 to the GOP’s capture of both the Senate and House in 1994 for the first time in 40 years.

The difference, Barbour suggested, is that Clinton, in time, made his peace with the Ronald Reagan revolution, informing Congress that the era of big government is over.

“His policies were liberal, but not nearly as far left as those of Obama,” Barbour said.

By contrast, Barbour went on, “Obama has given up on capitalism. ... He is expanding the size of government beyond anything that anyone previously dreamed of. His efforts to deal with climate change by executive fiat would impose an enormous tax on the poor and the working class, dragging down the American economy.”

Sweeping aside internal handwringing over the current state of the GOP, Barbour foresaw a bright future for the Republican Party.

5. And who is better to recognize one unless he is one?
I still remember a story about a successful business woman from a conservative district who made headlines when she supported Clinton in 1992. And her story was that she was invited to a special reception to the Republicans after giving them $100K - a large sum those days - and thus being part of the "Club of 100."

Barbour then was the head of the RNC and he came to her and with his honey voice asked her: and who are you with, little lady? She coldly looked at him and replied: I am with the Club of 100.

9. it's funny how each side views him
in one far corner we have him as a socialist who has given up on capitalism and in the other he's a corporatist who is in bed with the capitalist elite.

12. He's saying he thinks the Repubs
can retake the House and Senate in the midterms - bwahahahahaha

with their affiliation rate at 21% and falling fast across every demographic except oldsters and fundies (and barely managing to hang on to those groups)

And people will turn to this party they loathe because they like and approve of the President?

while I say this, but, Haley Barbour is one BIG FAT ASS BIGOT! When I lived in Arkansas, my neighbor was from Mississippi and her dad was an active GOP buffoon. She said she wasn't political, but I discovered she stole my John Kerry sign during the 2004 election right out of my front yard. I jokingly asked her if she took it and she said, "no, you know I don't care about that." I heard later from another neighbor that she did and laughed about it. These people are fucking nuts and so far behind the times it's ridiculous.

The last time I spoke with her was in October, before the election and she was asking me about Obama. She said she loved Sarah Palin, but would be open to hear what I said about voting for Obama. Needless to say, that was the biggest waste of my time. She had all the right wing talking points (I reminded her that I knew who her father was) and wouldn't listen. I haven't talked to her since and don't plan to. Sad because this is someone with a masters degree. I just don't get it. It is brainwashing in it's fullest.

But Haley Barbour...he's a fat joke...and I don't like calling people fat. He just brings out that side of me:argh:
