Obama's Surprise Court Choice? - U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello
All speculation, of course...but it's a fun palour game...

Obama's Surprise Court Choice?

Most Supreme Court speculation has revolved around a short list of high-profile candidates, but the White House is still telling reporters that it is considering a few dark-horse candidates. One of those may be U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello, an associate of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who recently told her local newspaper, The Pueblo Chieftain, that Obama's people had contacted her to ask if she "would be willing to go through the intense scrutiny" of a Supreme Court nomination. Arguello said yes.

Arguello, 53, was born to a family of railroad workers in the tiny town of Thatcher, Colorado. She was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from University of Colorado at Boulder and Harvard Law, where she was an editor of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. From 1980 to 1999, she practiced law and taught at the University of Kansas School of Law, subsequently serving as Colorado's Chief Deputy Attorney General under then Attorney General Salazar. After several abortive court nominations, she was confirmed as a Colorado District Court judge last December. At the time, The Rocky Mountain News wrote that "she believes her background will make her more understanding and empathetic to the 'common man' and attorneys who appear in her courtroom."

Click here for her full resume, and here for a slideshow of Obama's other possible Court picks.

1. OH NO, she said she's empathetic
she's doomed before she gets started. Didn't she get the memo that being "empathetic" is bad news to repukes and is now their only litmus test because so many people are comfortable with choice and gay marriage.

In all seriousness, she seems like a decent choice.

2. She is a good choice... but...IF we are speculating:
Last week, (I swear) I wrote on a piece of paper and gave it to my hubby -- Diane Wood.

Several abortive court nominations?

A district Judge for only 4 months?

And not with that name.

Sorry. Her record is not long enough or distiguished enough even if she can sing,

7. Uhh...isn't that what people said about Obama?
And he became president. I could easily see him picking her.

8. First of all,,,, even Colbert and Stewart are going to be joking about her name
Edited on Wed May-20-09 06:31 PM by Perky
THe bigger problem is that she lacks the bonafides to jump from a recently appointed Distict Judge to SCOTUS.

It is not even so much here as the number of judged who have been toiling and waint since the 1990s to move up the ladder who are going to be royally pissed at the slight.

Bottom line is there are many many more qualifieds ans she will look like a particularly weak affirmative action appointees.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

ANDE VEN beyond all of that. She went of the ranch and told a reporter she has been approached by the WHite House. That IS NEVER DONE. Completely inappropriate and suggest a temperment more suited for politics than the High Court.

9. A lot of a people said Obama didn't have the chops either
That he should wait his time. Obama and Wood go way back, so for you to say he'd never choose her shows what you really know indeed.

10. You lost me..... I never mentioned Wood ?????
And I do know what I am talking about. Saying to media that you are on the shortlist for anythin is a Kiss of Death. because it is unseemly and because it ties up the President in a very dymamic decison process. THere are lots of headfakes and trial balloon that go on until the final decision is made,

Point of Fact: Tim Kaine was on the shortlist for VEEP until he said he was on the shortlist for Veep.
