Republicans Tread Lightly

Peggy Noonan on the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to be on the Supreme Court:

"She is of course a brilliant political pick -- Hispanic when Republicans have trouble with Hispanics, a woman when they've had trouble with women. Her background (public housing, Newyorican, Catholic school, Princeton, prominence) is as moving as Clarence Thomas's, and that is moving indeed. Politically she's like a beautiful doll containing a canister of poison gas: Break her and you die."

2. To give Noonan credit...
Even though she's a right-wing tool, she's a smart right-wing tool. If she were running the Republican party, we might have something to worry about. Luckily, Limbaugh and Steele are pushing it toward the trash heap of history.

3. Charming Analogy, Peg!

Those WMD-style metaphors really warm the soul. Maybe she should pepper some of those into her next few commissioned speeches?

Clarence Thomas' story is/was moving? If we're talking about a bowel movement, I couldn't agree more.

Edited on Fri May-29-09 08:29 AM by Orsino
She's pimping the meme that Sotomayor was only nominated for her race and sex. When the Republicans fail to stop this appointment, her excuse will be that they were unfairly prevented from opposing her by her race and sex. Win-win.

Almost no one is actually that stupid, but Noonan has always been paid handsomely to lie, and can't possibly have any remaining scruples.

20. What the hell is
Newyorican? Fortunately for the Democrats, the pukes simply cannot help themselves from being assholes. Ms. Sotomayor WILL be our next justice. By the time they're finished trashing her (and by extension, Hispanics and women), they will have no ammunition that will leave a mark on the next pick where is where I suspect Pres Obama is going to go more to the left.

21. New York Puerto Rican?
I am not sure since I never heard the term myself, but when I lived in New York, there was a considerable population of Puerto Ricans there, which I found interesting since I was from Texas and only knew Mexican culture (the watered-down Texas version).

25. It is not. It is a term MANY New York Puerto Ricans call themselves
who were born here around the 60s/70s. Rosie Perez is a known Nuyorican and is not shy about calling herself such.

34. Boricua is "now" term. Nuyorican is an old term.
Edited on Fri May-29-09 02:20 PM by vaberella
You'll find kids today identify themselves as Boricuan---considering I have close friends who do and a book on that as well. I think Boricua was when they were taking back their heritage during the late 80s-90s.

I believe the original name given by Natives of Puerto Rico before US invasion (or was it Spanish)--I think it was US--- was Boricua and it's the way they were redefining themselves to take back their heritage.

Plus there's the Uni called Boricua College (I believe it's one of the schools part of the Columbia system) a few blocks from my house. Nuyorican is normally used for Puerto Ricans born in NYC during the late 50s/60s/70s and I think 80s--since the 60s kids would be adults by the 80s. By late 80s and later it's changed.

Blacks have done this too. It's like the evolution of Negro to African-American while there are some who identify themselves as Black.

Edit: It depends on the generation.

I was friendly with several of the early artists around the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in the early 70s. It was a wonderful arts movement of poets, actors, playwrights, musicians, just wonderful. When I left in the mid-90s it was still going strong there in the East Village.

31. Wow...I'm really shocked. I never thought about that. What part of Manhattan?
Ever been uptown hung out with Hispanics? You have heard of Spanish Harlem right?

Well a great book/ethnography on life in Spanish Harlem and touching on Nuyorican's is In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio by Philippe Bourgois

Here's a link with a bit of the book: http://books.google.com/books?id=XTC1ny-utfgC&dq=Selling+Crack+in+El+barrio&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=OjAgSraLC4PoNKuP3a8J&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4#PPR13,M1

Well the name is common and it's used. I know people who still consider themselves Nuyoricans although they've passed that generational time period. Rosie Perez is a well known self-proclaimed Nuyorican and she's talked about it in interviews. The struggle, the life, the adapting and the historical relationship between New York and Puerto Rican immigration during the 50s/60s/ and 70s.

The man was not in the least qualified for the position. Forget all the character flaws, forget his horrid positions and shocking behavior. Before you even GOT there, the man did not have the resume for the job.

Sotomayor has it, and several times over.
