Frett not former GM workers
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 10:53 AM by AllentownJake
20 years ago in my community, the Steel Mills were closed. Bethlehem Steel was way ahead of the game here.

Do not worry, Allentown made a comeback (well not Allentown the city, but the suburbs are doing great!) and Bethlehem is doing all right. We attracted some new industries and new jobs and now we are the fasted growing area in PA. I'm not being sarcastic about that. There is nothing as monolithic as the old Bethlehem Steel but we have recovered.

However, let me tell you what my brilliant local politicians did with that mill that once produced the Steel that built this country.

It is now...a Casino. I wish I was joking.

1. Instead Of Ghost Towns In The Old West, They'll Be In The Upper Midwest
Maybe they could become tourist attractions? Wish I was joking too.

7. I hope one of the MI plants
gets the new small car GM will be building in the US. I won't get my hopes up though.

3. In the 1981-82 Reagan recession, Steel died here in Pittsburgh....
...but we've rebounded very nicely.

Detroit can do the same.

4. Your sister steel city across the state rebounded as well
I just find it disgusting they erected a Casino where the Steel that built America was.

8. I hope we can
Our governor, with her focus on green technology and the film industry, has set Detroit and our entire state on the right path. It will be a very painful and depressing few more years (after 8 years of recession already) though.

5. I'm sure it will rebound eventually,
but I feel sorry for all the baby boomers that are out of jobs. It's a really tough time for people in their 50's and 60's to be out of a job.

6. Do the new jobs pay as well as the steel mill?
Do they have the insurance and pensions the steel industry had?
