Kirk's strong quarter of fundraising
Mark Kirk, the Republican congressman running for President Obama’s former Senate seat in Illinois, announced that he raised over $1.6 million in the third fundraising quarter – a strong showing that will likely place him among the top Congressional fundraisers.

Kirk also reported that 86 percent of the funds received came from in-state contributors. He begins October with $2.3 million in his campaign account.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming grassroots support our campaign continues to receive throughout the State of Illinois,” Kirk said in a statement. “The people of Illinois are looking for a reformer who can reign in spending, lower taxes, create jobs and turn the page on Rod Blagojevich’s culture of corruption.”

Alexi Giannoulias, Kirk’s leading Democratic opponent, ended June with $1.65 million in his campaign account. Giannoulias hasn’t announced his latest fundraising figures yet.
