18. I called Baucus' office once
And the woman who answered asked me which advocacy group I represented. I said, "Since I'm sitting in my living room in Davenport, Iowa, I'd say me." She proceeded to take my name and thanked me. So they don't all hang up on out of staters.

5. That;s not unusual. Well, hanging up is, but many Reps & Sens
won't even let you email them is you are not a State resident. In fact, of all people, Bernie Sanders is one of them. I remember him saying on a Hartmann show to email him, then he added "Just use any VT address or it won't get through."

9. That's kind of understandable -- people of the State want their reps listening
to THEM, not to people who live elsewhere.

I've just called (and e-mailed) and said "although not a constituent, I'm prepared to contributed to Congressman/woman's _______ opponent when s/he is up for re-election". I figure that's all they care about anyway -- votes and money.

33. The only problem with that outdated notion is that...
lobbyists, be they from his district, some corporation in or out of state, or from as far away as Israel, do get lieberman's ear.

But people, be they from his state or around the U.S. do not get his ear.

Something is broken.

40. You make an excellent point.
And I would add that their individual votes oftentimes do affect all Americans so it is not unreasonable for someone from out of the district to contact them with concerns.

13. Truth be told I don't want Webb and Warner from VA listening to out of staters either
They were elected to represent the interests of Virginia not the interests of someone from California, Michigan or anywhere else.

Granted, Lieberman's office's response was pretty rude but I won't hold the general practice of shutting out non-residents against them.

21. I understand what people are feeling.
My senators support a public option...they are representing me. I feel rather helpless that all the work and effort are potentially wasted because of Lieberman. I feel like calling Lieberman's office and telling him to fuck off, but he's not my senator and he doesn't represent me.

27. It is horse shit. US Senators make decisions that effect the entire US.
And we out of staters can in fact contribute to their opponents if we do desire. It is not confined to a state by state case basis as much as you would like to think it is.

DEAL WITH IT.

30. I don't think it's confined to anything.
But the entire point of having local representatives is that they represent the issues of a geographical segment of the population. This is not a new concept at all.

31. Why did you say you were out of State?! I call in and give a very Republican dominated zip code.
You get more things done this way. There's no need to tell anyone what State you're in. I'm in NYC so I don't have to deal with a lot of things other states do. That being said, I want to help other constituents who may not be Blue but are purple and leaning blue. So I call in and give a Republican Zip and do my duty.
