Here's a letter I just sent to Russert at mtp@nbc.com
Dear Mr. Russert,
I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with your absurdly unbalanced Meet the Press show this morning. At one time, I believe, you were considered a respectable journalist, and one occasionally does still see flashes of that on your show. Unfortunately, over the last few years, you have been coopted increasingly by the Republican propaganda machine, to the point where you now feel no qualms or shame about going right along with their meme du jour.
Following a week where the distance between reality and the Bush Administration's ludicrous spin on Iraq became increasingly clear, you chose to devote most of your show to interviewing Gen. Abizaid spouting the Administration's talking points --- apparently reading from a TelePrompTer. I fail to understand the point of this exercise. It is unlikely that a serving general would publicly dispute his Commander-in-Chief. At least the poor man was able to get in a dig about the upcoming Iraqi elections being like the 2000 elections in the U.S. Then, instead of following up Gen. Abizaid's pap with a skeptical analysis, you handed things over to two right-wing pundits (Novak and Safire), a half-asleep anal retentive middle-of-the-roader (Broder) and a historian who, while personally liberal, is not a partisan. Not surprisingly, this led to twenty minutes of unmitigated Kerry-bashing. The only thing lacking was an announcement at the end that George Bush had authorized your show.
If you have any ethics left --- which I doubt --- you will follow up this shameful show with one that features only Gen. Clark, Gen. McPeak or Gen. Zinni, and have a round table comprising E.J. Dionne, Paul Krugman, Davis Broder (he's irrelevant anyway) and, say, Robert Dallek. The only problem is that, unlike your panel today, this proposed panel would not include an accused criminal (Novak) or a known dirty-trickster (Safire). They don't have too many of those on the left. Oh yes, and perhaps you can get Keith Olbermann to moderate instead of yourself. What do you say, Mr. Russert? A weekend off to go watch the Bills lose?
