USA DECAY - Gallup defends results against MoveOn.org attack
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-09-28-gallup-defense_x.htm

This year's USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup polling on the presidential race is coming under attack from liberal critics who say Gallup's methods produce results that are biased in favor of President Bush.

Gallup says it stands by its work, which Tuesday showed Bush ahead of Sen. John Kerry by eight percentage points among likely voters — if the election were held "today." That was down from a 13-point lead for Bush two weeks earlier. Gallup's recent polls have consistently shown Bush further ahead than he is in other surveys.

USA TODAY said Tuesday it remains confident in Gallup.

CNN spokesmen were unavailable for comment.

In recent weeks, complaints about the USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup polls had mostly been aired in "blogs," or online diaries, on the Internet. Tuesday, the issue spilled into the "mainstream media." MoveOn.org, a liberal advocacy group, paid $68,000 to run a full-page ad in The New York Times. The ad's headline: "Gallup-ing to the Right. Why does America's top pollster keep getting it wrong?"

...But not all pollsters agree with Gallup's approach. John Zogby is CEO of the independent polling firm Zogby International.

He adjusts the voter pools in his surveys to mirror party affiliations expressed in earlier exit polls. "I am one of the heretics in the polling industry," he said Tuesday. He maintains that "there are variations in people's party affiliations, but they aren't changing much daily, weekly or even monthly."

1. Zogby has been historically more accurate than any of the other polls....
...while Gallup has produced results far to the right of the actual results.

11. Zogby is the only poll I look at. Period
Did you see that Bink at Dailykos is calling for Wolf Blitzer to resign for constantly reporting bogus Gallup polls?

12. If by historically you mean 1996
and being off by the same % as Gallup in 2000, then yes.

5. No kidding
They failed to mention in this article how wrong their polls were in 2000.

8. where did you get that?
I looked for Gallup's old polling nos. and could only find the Nov. 2000 poll which placed Bush at 48 and Gore at 46. Still off, but much less so than the one you posted. The Nov. number is the only number posted on Gallup's website. What lying a-holes!!! This seems very insidious. Post crappy nos. up until the last day before elections, and then post realistic ones, thereby dampening the dem. vote but still showing a somewhat accurate no. on election day???

9. link courtesy of robbedvoter in the thread I mentioned

Please read the thread also. There is a devastating and well documented article there that will totally change your fear of polls.

3. Could someone explain to me the crux of the problem with Gallup?
I know it has something to do with over-sampling pigs.

7. You can see the problem in the table of that USA TODAY article
The latest poll from Gallup sampled 12% more Republicans than Democrats and as a result it shows Bush 8% ahead of Kerry.

6. What an informative article.
I wasn't sure if Gallup would admit that their polls are worthless and, thus, nullify their entire existence. But after reading this article, it seems that they are sticking to their story.

Great journalism -- cutting edge.

10. Notice how they only show
the 40% repukes polled figure but not the 35% Dem figure against it? They make the reader figure it out for themselves by reading the chart. I guess spelling it out plainly in words would really show Gallup to be the biased corrupt outfit it is. It would also show USA Today and CNN lockstepped in this whole fraud.

Who wants to make a bet this is all we will hear about this story. It will quickly vanish from all media and if pressed down the road on it they will say "hey we covered that". It amazing how brazen they are about all of this.
