Jesse Jackson joins Kerry campaign as senior adviser
i don't agree with the poll. it seems a bit off. but i do think while Kerry already has a large percentage of african americans supporting him the goal is to get the turnout on election day. especially in swing states.

<WASHINGTON (AP) Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson joined the campaign of Sen. John Kerry on Wednesday as a poll showed support for the presidential candidate slipping among black Americans, a critical Democratic constituency.

The Pew Research Center said Tuesday its latest poll showed 73 percent of blacks supporting Kerry compared to 12 percent supporting President Bush. In 2000, Al Gore won 90 percent of the black vote.

Democratic groups have aired campaign ads criticizing Republican efforts to woo black voters.

The Kerry campaign said Jackson, who will serve as a senior adviser, will travel to battleground states to energize Democratic support for Kerry and running mate John Edwards. >

2. I think the campaign realizes it needs to reach out more to
minority voters thus bringing Jackson and dispatching Obama to key states. I think Kerry will get 90% of the AA vote, but we do need strong turnout in this community--at levels Clinton and Gore got. A southern democrat connects much better with the black community (Carter, Clinton and Gore all did very well) than an northern dem probably because they have significant AA populations in their states. I think this is a smart move for Kerry.

4. It seems like Jesse Jackson has been almost invisible in this campaign.
Maybe he has been working on it, but we just don't hear about it (liburl media, you know!).

At any rate, it will be great to have him on board.

5. Good news! Blacks and women are moving to Bush because of the
the "fear based" message. :scared:

As I said ... if we lose the election it will be because we didn't take the myth of Bush being "our great protector" right out from under him.

Terrorism has surpsed the economy and healthcare as a #1 concern among voters this year ... trouble is, most voters don't realize Bush's protector image is a facade. It's the JOB of the Kerry campaign to expose the wizard for who he is. If the campaign doesn't do this, or a 527 doesn't do this, we will lose.

:hi:

16. Jesse was blasting Kerry last week

for not involving more African Americans on his staff.

Guess that helped Jesse get the job.

Whatever, Kerry really should have selected him from the beginning.
He should have known that Jesse has an ego as big as Central Park - LOL

Kerry/Edwards 04

ps/ I am African American and I really don't see ANY slipping among African Americans. I can only guess that some of the Born Agains will be told to vote like their minister tells them to vote.
Bush has given a lot of money to some of the Black Churches. This may be a part of the pay off.

But, what they say they will do and what my brothers and sisters do in the voting booth is another story.

I'm sure the base is solid but let's get out that vote!
If you can help gets some seniors to the polls in the African American community, please do. I am sure that 99% of those over 50 would never dream of voting for a racist like George Bush.

17. LOL - yes and no

It would be great if Janet could work like hell with the young voters, not FOR the Kerry Campaign directly.

Remember that it is the Rethugs that are "mad" at Janet. The young voters LOVE her! They would do anything she tells them to do.

Many of the 16 -38 yr. olds will pay $150 for a ticket to see her.
They believe that it was the racist media that had the malfunction, not Janet.

15. I don't buy that poll, either
but I think Kerry does need some help in shoring up certain Dem constituencies, so this is a good move. It will help turnout, too.

18. I think Kerry's problem is that...
the issue that's dominated the campaign and news coverage is Iraq. Domestic issues that blacks and other dem groups care about are being put aside.

20. right, remember he was addressing it but they didn't cover it
but when he does campaign in mostly black areas, the domestic issues are the ones they most want to know about. most of the questions are about jobs .

it would be easier if the big media would just cover everything but they don't so that means there is more need for people to do direct campaigning by going to the people to answer their concerns and appeal to them.
