Democratic governor in Utah? Strange but true. Race tied!
I got an email from the Scott Matheson (D) campaign this morning with the following: (after a chart showing Matheson 35 Huntsman (R) 39 in April and 42% each now, the chart doesn't cut and paste.)

"The poll was conducted by GarinHartYang, one of the most experienced and respected polling firms in the country. It shows each candidate receiving 42% of support, with 16% of likely voters polled still undecided. The poll conducted on September 28 and 29 of 505 likely Utahn voters statewide has a margin of error of 4.4%.

This most recent polling reflects a significant upsurge in support towards Scott’s candidacy as more and more voters begin to focus on the Governor’s race and the important issues facing Utah.

The results of this latest statewide survey (September 28-29) show that Scott has made up significant ground against John Huntsman Jr., and the gubernatorial race is now tied."

My son works for Jim Matheson and is taking a class from Dan Jones (local pollster). Jones said last month that if Matheson can be within 5% by October 15, he'll win. (Jones is sort of a Republican so he's not sugar coating it.)

This is GREAT news for Utah.

Scott does need money. If you Utahans (or anyone for that matter) can help, please do! I know Scott and he's a great guy. I didn't think we had a shot. He's running against Jon Huntsman who is the son of a very generous local philanthropist but the son is an empty suit.

2. Awesome News...
My wife and I lived in SLC for a dozen years mostly with Bangarter as gov...then a short time with Levitt...

It would be great to see a Democrat leading Utah for a change.

Was it Scott Matheson's father that was a popular politician (gov?) in the the 80s?

Anyway... thanks for the post... I will have to give some old Friends a call to get their take on things...:-)

:kick:

3. Yes, Scott Matheson is the son of the former governor
of the same name. (Sr. and Jr.) Scott Jr. is the Dean of the law school at the University of Utah. His brother is in congress (Jim). Jim is too conservative for me, but they are both very good on the environment which is a huge issue here in Utah as the feds keep trying to give our beautiful land to developers etc.

Scott Jr. has a daughter the same age as my son and they went to pre-school together. It was progressive pre-school at the Unitarian (ne: atheist church) in Salt Lake. I got to know he and his wife then. They are not cookie cutter mormons.

Scott Sr. was a great guy too. I'm a lawyer so I knew the dad too. Very decent people.

If you know anyone in Utah who could help, give them a call. They should at least put up a lawn sign!

(Funny story: I used to work with a freeper-type. HATED Carter, and all dems (how can you HATE Carter?) believes the liberal press lies to us, etc. She HATES Huntsman and she and her husband (a bigger freeper if possible) are voting and actively working for Scott.)
