Check out today's Iconoclast Editorial....
http://news.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Editorial/editorial40.htm

snip-
The Iconoclast received considerable criticism this past week
after its editors endorsed John Kerry for President. Several subscriptions and advertisements were canceled after the newspaper hit the stands Tuesday morning.

snip-
We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.
-snip

snip-
The new mode of operation, I am told, is that when a newspaper prints an editorial of which some sectors might disagree, the focus is now upon how to run the newspaper out of business. Out the window are the contributions the newspaper has made to the community in the past and the newspaper’s extensive investment in the community.
-snip

From the period of Tuesday through noon Saturday of this past week, The Iconoclast has received over 700 letters to the editor related to the editorial which received more attention than we had expected. Some of the dispatches are very critical and some are very supportive of the editorial. And a few do offer a thoughtful, differing point of view on the issues, which we do appreciate.

I'm subscribing!!!! :hi:

1. For those who can't afford to subscribe, please send them a small
contribution to help them over this bad time and to show your support for freedom of the press.

2. I called in and ordered it for 1 year. Nothing ticks me off more than
the people in this country that try to stifle opposing voices. They don't really believe in what we are supposedly doing in Iraq then do they? Makes as much sense to me as people who don't vote when we have troops dying to bring democracy to another country (allegedly).

4. Agreed. And nothing makes me happier than when those people
are called on it. Shame on them for harassing college students.

3. How sad this is
but it just reinforces the fact that some (many) repugs are no better than nazis. This is *'s legacy.

These thugs, I am sure, fancy themselves as good Christians; probably the go to church in their fine repug suits every Sunday. Next they will be burning crosses.

I am so sad for our country.

12. Not just Bush
This attitude that you can coerce people's political opinions got going with Newt Gingrich and has been pushed by DeLay and others.

I hope the worm is turning.

I think many Texans are becoming appalled at what's become of the state.

5. I'm GLAD they pointed out the it is THIS admin that is so very wrong!
I enjoyed the part about "the Pugs didn't complain when we endorsed Clinton or Gore". It makes it all the more obvious that THIS Bush admin is only full of vengence and evil intent!

such asses!

edited to include one to the ltte:

I am embarrassed and sad that someone who names his paper after the great State of Texas (LONE STAR) could have the audacity to take a public position against our President. President Bush and the first Lady represent everything real TEXANS and CHRISTIANS stand for today. I cannot understand how anyone in your community could ever buy an ad or one of your papers again. Please think about what John Kerry represents as compared to President Bush and hopefully you will make the decision to honor your home by supporting OUR PRESIDENT

15. These are the same people who advocated segregation
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 07:52 PM by Texas_Dem
they still do, but cannot openly say so. They take their vitriolic anger out on Democrats, and minorities because it is easier to avoid the label of racist. They hide behind the bible and the flag, but in truth they are neither Christians nor patriots.

How sweet it will be so see their boy Shrub get his ass kicked.

Hello,
My name is CA and I am a member of the Democratic Underground. I understand that your town is making a statement by canceling subscriptions. I am wondering if you would be willing to take out a full page ad stating this and who paid for this ad. I would like to say something about the way your town and your President turn away from you. I think you could put this better than I. Please let me know. I realize people have been subscribing but I know ads can be a money maker for you. I also need a price for this. Let me know and I will see if we can make this happen. You stood for the truth and we at DU think that is a brave and wonderful thing for anyone to do under this administration. Thank you for considering this idea.
CA

14. Folks...under the Bush regime...we don't live in a democracy anymore...
How dare we question der Fuhrer or disagree with any of his decisions or policies. We aren't allowed opposing views anymore.

If this isn't any indication of how our nation is so divided right now, then I don't know what is. I will be so glad to flip that switch for Kerry, get the current *ssclown out of the WH and save our Constitution and our democracy!!!

:-(

16. Another letter - I just can't help myself
Looks like your liberal paper should join the ranks of Dan Rather. Why don't you ask the Houston Chronicle what happens when you start misleading people. You get dropped. I hope many of your big 400 plus subscribers dump your paper. You want to talk about Kerry's years in public office, why don't you tell the truth about his Senate years. They want talk about it either, because he has done NOTHING but vote against the American People and our Military. Will see what happens in Nov. THIS IS BUSH COUNTY GET USED TO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And John Kerry served 4 years and got 2 purple hearts for baby wounds and cried to come home. George Bush at least served his entire commitment to the National Guard and then some and never cried to come home. If you want John Kerry as President more power to you, because you deserve him.
