How to E-Mail LA Times Publisher Jeff Johnson, Save Scheer
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 12:20 PM by umtalal
Protest Plans to Drop Robert Scheer's Tuesday Column (which would grossly imbalance the Op-Ed page to the right ). the editorial page endorsed the redistricting of California and ofcourse the imitative failed. We are seeing a tilt to the right from the Los Angeles Times in a town and county that is heavily BLUE!!! I hope we can kick this thing in one of the DU petition drives.

Email the LA Times:

Publisher - Jeff.Johnson@latimes.com

Editor - Dean.Baquet@latimes.com

Scheer out as of December

Here's an update to my exclusive post last Friday on the end of Robert
Scheer's column on the L.A. Times op-ed page: He went on KPCC's
"Airtalk with Larry Mantle" this morning (audio) and said he has now been informed the column will stop running at the end of the year. Scheer speculated about political pressure on the Times because of his lefty views, and noted he has been "a punching bag" for Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh for many years, but he told Mantle "I don't know what's driving them because they won't tell me." No one from the Times would comment to Mantle either. I've previously reported on plans to revamp the lineup of Times op-ed columnists. Scheer's column will still be distributed through Creators.com, and as I mentioned on
Friday he will soon launch a new webzine called TruthDig.com.
Supporters of Scheer's work have apparently begun a letter and email-writing campaign hoping to convince Times Publisher Jeffrey M. Johnson to keep the column.
In LA, email to jeff.johnson@latimes.com with cc: readersrep@latimes.com, andres.martinez@latimes.com

For those of you sending emails to the Times, please be sure to include your name, address and phone.

4. I have written them.
I have kept steady pressure on them with my letters. Now that the election is over, I told them that we in Labor and the Democratic Party have noted the LA Times swing to the Right and support of Ahhnuld and Big Business--it won't be forgotten.

I gave them the election results for LA County
Prop 74= 62% NO
Prop 75= 62% NO
Prop 76= 68% NO

I asked them how they thought they were representing LA County. Finally, I let them know that all the prestige the LA Times (supposedly) has couldn't sway the final vote.

5. I'm on board. We gotta keep Scheer.
He was the only voice in the wilderness for some of us back before we discovered DU. He does write for "The Nation" as well.

11. I don't even know where to begin.
What should I say?

Dear Mr. Baquet

The recent changes to the Los Angeles Times editorial section are rather puzzling. Why have the essays submitted by the editors suddenly dominated one side of a page at the expense of the beloved "letters to the editor" from L.A. Times readers? Why is it necessary to include "Editorials from Elsewhere" - again at the expense of readers letters or other issues of local interest. The inane quotes from the fourth grade reading level letters that are printed on the top of the section?

It is being said that the editors desire to shift the L.A. Times editorial section to the center/right. The dismissal of columnist Robert Scheer at the end of the year would certainly lead one to believe that this is the case. Quite frankly these changes rather perplex me, in that many of the readers - that the editorial board has already alienated by these changes - will most likely cancel their subscriptions to the paper? The editors have taken that into consideration, haven't they?

Do what you have to do but you'll not have my money to do it with."

help me out here please. I'd like this to be effective as possible. pm me if you have better ideas.
