Orange county - the only one to vote for all of Arnold's and for 73
and Long Beach Press Telegram is envious:

Against the electoral tide

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the big loser in California's special election, voters themselves, in our opinion, were close behind. But there were notable exceptions.

While voters in most of the state seemed to be bent on bashing their own best interests as well as Schwarzenegger's, those in Orange County went in a refreshingly different direction. That region is said to be evolving leftward from its conservative origins, but if so, it didn't show on Tuesday.

While every one of Schwarzenegger's Big Four propositions was failing by wide margins statewide, every one passed in Orange County, as did the abortion measure, Proposition 73. San Diego County voted somewhat similarly, except, bafflingly, for rejecting 76 (budget limitations) and 77 (redistricting).

1. Despite this... OC is leaning leftward... many dems moving into the area..
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 06:43 PM by SF Bay Area Dem
... many conservatives moving out... which is a good thing! San Diego is not as conservative as they make it out to be.

and whites moving out of San Diego. Not trying to sound racist or anything but it's documented that minorities tend to vote more Democrat than whites as we all know.

Besides, most of California's white Republicans are moving to Nevada and Colorado I hear. I guess they feel more at home there for whatever reason.

6. Your kidding right?
Hispanics tend to be split down the middle, with actually the majority going with the repugs simply because of the anti-choice issue. The Vietnamese and Koreans, in which there is a large demographic of in the OC as well, tend to go overwhemingly with the repugs.

... that all of these people leaving are "Republicans". The person I know leaving this month for Colorado is more left leaning than others here.

We didn't vote "progressive" when we voted for Mayor last election, which was pretty disappointing for folks like me.

There are many like me, white or minority, who've been discouraged over the last year. In addition to the cost of housing getting out of control, which affects many of us except the rich, it feels like if there's any trend towards more liberals coming here, the trend towards housing getting of control is higher. I'd earlier been planning to buy a house here, but have put that almost on permanent hold here now (at least while I'm here).

My big measurements for whether I want to stay here or not, in addition to cost of living issues, are what happens with both the 50th district congressional election and the clean elections proposition that hopefully gets on the ballot in 2006. If those can both go the progressive direction, I'll have more confidence that things can change. If Rethug wins Cunningham's old seat, and they shoot down clean elections, then I think I'm out of here too and off to someplace like Oregon, and my parents, who've been here longer than I have, might move away too if I go. I also note that many folks that are retired are leaving from here too, with their house values perhaps peaking with mortgage rates going up now, wanting to settle down someplace else where it's less expensive. Next door neighbors just moved to Oregon, and my Mom in her retirement neighborhood has known many to leave and sees many for sale signs there. Many of these folks are also left leaning as well, though certainly not all.

Hispanics also aren't always progressive. On religious issues, they tend to be conservative. A heavy hispanic population still could possibly pass something like 73.

victory for Democratic coalitions in California to show that the Republican extremists got lucky in the recall election - there was a split in the Democratic vote then. They parlayed that split into the Statehouse.

Worked once. I don't think that tactic will work here again. Especially after the head to head showdowns that these Propositions put before the voters on Tuesday.

The Republican extremists thought Prop 73 would win and carry the rest of the Governor's agenda.

Not only did 73 fail, they all did. I'd call that a win for Dem's.

And a good portent for '06.

Somewhere, the much maligned Mr. Davis is chuckling.

4. The OC No votes still counted!
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 01:56 AM by Pushed To The Left
The No votes in conservative counties count just as much as No votes in progressive counties. It all adds up! Those OC No votes may have been in the minority here, but they added to the other No's across the state, leading to a progressive victory!!

There may not be a lot us us, but more than there used to be. Now, if we could only get some of these conservatives out of their safe seats at the local level! We're working on it.:-)

12. I remember when OC was rural and agricultural.
A building boom that paved and put up a suburbia made those entities extinct. I don't think there is a single grove of orange trees left there. The housing tracts attracted middle class Republicans who moved into those bedroom communities because they wanted to get away from the ethnic diversity of the city.

14. That would explain it. Too bad about the orange groves...
I suppose most of the oranges come from Florida now?

15. Yes, as S. Calif. boomed in the late fifties onwards,
we increasingly got our oranges from Florida and other states and now other countries. The catalyst to this drastic change in the demographic and the urbanization was the opening of Disneyland in 1955.

20. Long Beach is mostly blue
But the pinheads at that shitty rag I call the Pressed-Smellogram would rather keep their heads buried firmly in their asses.

Only a stupid fascist would argue that by voting FOR our interests, we are voting AGAINST them. This is one of the tactics they use to lure the blue-collar folks to vote their way - especially in body-control issues like the abortion-oriented Prop 73.

San Diego County is Orange County Lite. Beautiful place, but a lot of empty minds.

Tried to have a conversation with some San Diegans (not from our forum) about the real estate situation. They had the whole rw spin on the whole thing, it didn't take me long to figure out who and what they vote for...

p.s. Sorry I'm so late to this conversation, again.
