It may come as surprise to some of you but the tightening of the border with Mexico, via increased patrolling and the "fence" has exacerbated the number of Mexican immigrants here illegally.
In years prior, when the border was easier to go back and forth over, migrant workers came up here, worked, and then crossed back home for a period of time to be with their families. Not so now. Too risky. Now, instead of a guy coming up to work and migrating back to visit with family, he stays. And to top it off he brings his whole family with him. Better to risk it once and stay here than go back and forth. And better still to bring the family to avoid missing them.
The border with Mexico is not as simple as some might try to make it out to be. Starting from the premise that we cannot keep people out would be a good start in my opinion. That way we can develop immigration policy that is both effective and cost effective.
I do not favor open an border. Flooding our labor market with cheap labor, as is happening, does nothing but hurt us here that work hard and play by the rules. Illegal hiring creates illegal immigration. Go for the throat...imprison employers and confiscate their assets. Of course it is not that simple but that is where the draw is created. By those who hire.
my 2 cents
