Californians in Texas
I live in Houston, TX. and I have been noticing a rather large amount of California license plates here in Houston. What is happening? Are Californians exiting California due to the new governor, or are these Calfirnians who left during the Davis governorship? I know that during the recall election, Larry Elder and Darrell Issa claimed that people were leaving California in large numbers due to Davis' governorship. However, it seems that I see more California license plates here in Houston now that Arnorld is the governor than when Davis was the governor.

2. Several CA banks have relocated servicing centers to Houston

World, WAMU and First Fed that I'm aware of. That is part of it. I believe that the Texas-based Power companies also pulled their trading floors in June and moved them to Houston one step ahead of State oversight and the Attorney General's subpoenas.

3. Just a thought
I haven't lived in Houston in almost 10 years now so I am not sure if it has a large Tech base or not. If so, then that may be the reason. Several of the companies in Austin brought in ppl from CA to work there.

4. Mostly it's Silicon Valley transferring to Texas
The California economy is so inflated, that Texas has become attractive. Hewlett-Packard/Compaq is huge in Houston, and Dell, MacIntosh, Wang, 3M etc. have taken over Austin.

Californians are selling their 2000 sq. ft. cheaply built tract houses, and moving to Texas where they can take their equity and buy 8,000 sq. foot mansions with luxury custom amenities. Real Estate that has inflated to 4 times higher than Texas is probably the main reason for the exodus.

This is a typical housing "tract" near H-P/Compaq's huge complex where homes start in the $300's up to a million. These homes would be three to four MILLION in California.

5. California >> Texas >> California
I moved to Dallas for one year, and it was the biggest mistake I ever made in my life.

Many Californians move to Texas because real estate is so much cheaper. I was happy with a much larger apartment for less money and more everyday conveniences. However, I also made alot less money.

I got depressed and found it too easy to go to the mall and drop $100 on clothes or something - so I ended up spending more money. I also found 'conservative attitudes' so pervasive in Dallas. There are plenty of liberals there, but I discovered many people just assume 'everybody' listens to Rush Limbaugh, goes to church and votes GOP.

6. Also SBC
SBC bought out Pacific Bell so a lot of Californians had to move to Texas. I doubt any Californian left because of the governor. It's economics.
