What is WRONG with our youth?
While watching the Rice hearing coverage on the news tonight there was a report about a group of students from a socal school that will be travelling to DC for the inauguration. They all seemed thrilled. What the hell is up with that?

I don't get it, really. Not one seemed outraged or upset. Not one even showed a hint of rebellion in their eyes, like they may decide to protest once they are there. What's the deal? Why are youth today more concerned with who wins American Idol?

They all spoke of how it was a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity and how they couldn't wait. Their teacher who apparently arranged this insanity is requiring them to keep a journal of their travel experience and write a report of the inauguration. Can you say 'Teacher is a Freeper?'

His remarks were, "just wanted them to see that they could do anything with hard work."

I'm praying one of them has a black armband packed away or a protest sign of some sort, but I fear I am hoping in vain. :(

Any thoughts on this?

2. What age are these students? And from what part of SoCal? . . .
Those tidbits would make a substantial difference in my opinion.

6. I'm sorry I can't provide that info...
I was kind of half-watching, and not paying full attention as I do now when I tune in to the news.

3. Hmmm
Maybe only the 'manageable' students were given the 'opportunity' to go on this 'once in a lifetime' trip? :silly:

4. "they could do anything with hard work."
I doubt very much that it is "hard work" for a pack of freeper kids and a freeper teacher to get a pass to that stink fest. I'll bet they get probably , oh I'd say 2 or 3 requests a day for tickets to it.

I could think of a thousand different ways that the energy of their "hard work" could be put to better use.

10. Hard work
I think he meant that you can even get to be president if you work hard enough (and being president is hard work, as we know). He forgot to mention the need for money, connections, and a complete lack of moral scruples.

7. Sorry, but more than 4 million more youth,
18-30 range came out to vote this time around than in 2000. And guess what, they were the only age bracket that went solidly for Kerry. What's wrong with our youth? Sorry but, what's wrong with our old people?

12. Point taken, but my post
was not referring to 'voting age' youth--but the next generation of voters. Junior high or high school aged children/youth that are going on this trip.

To them they are getting a trip out of state to the nation's capital. To me, this teacher is pushing his own agenda by taking inner city youths that may not get another opportunity to go out of state like this. They see a trip away--their teacher may think he is grooming the next generation of conservatives. (bleh)

He MAY is the key word here--don't know the man personally or his motivations. But I didn't like what I saw of it on the news...

8. It's what you get.
You know how it sucks that corporations are more and more in control of school curriculums and materials?

Have you noticed how a few people around here complain that our media isn't doing its proper job?

ritalin?

Ever been to SOUTHERN California?

There's a reason that we (and I'm sure you as well), as liberals, have been complaining about the direction our country is headed.

This is one of the many thousand of reasons why.

That said, I hope they have a good time and it will be a great learning opportunity for them. Students have a way of learning different things than their teachers intend.

14. Yes, exactly. Thank you.
I hope that you are right--in that they may take something away from this experience than the guy intends.

Maybe they will see the pomp and circumstance and wonder how they can spend so much on a ceremony when we are at war. Or maybe they'll get a glimpse of all the 'impeach bush' protesters that will be present and wonder about that...

Here's hoping. :)

...gets students to a historic event and asks them to write about it. Also a trip to DC maybe these kids first.

Perish the thought.

"
His remarks were, "just wanted them to see that they could do anything with hard work." "

Is this quote related to Bush or was the teacher referring to the kids working to get funds for the trip ro grades or whatever.

I know we had to do some fund raising when I was in Close-Up 15 years ago.

On Edit: Close-Up was a citzenship program where kids from all over the country met to discuss policy, tour DC, meet our Reps & Senators etc.

13. exactly---
...gets students to a historic event and asks them to write about it. Also a trip to DC maybe these kids first.

Maybe to this guy he is taking them to a historic event--And historic in what sense? That his guy gets to stay in the white house? That THEY won? Or the truth, that they pulled the wool over a nation's eyes and cheated their asses back in?

He takes impressionable youth to this thing. In their minds'--wow, I get to take a trip that I've never taken before.' Maybe the thought will get a step further to equate who/what helped make this trip possible for them--a Republican. Not a Dem.

Think about it. Who's ethics are 'hard work?' And why couldn't they work hard and earn a trip to something else that isn't so obviously endorsing a conservative/Republican agenda?

I'm sorry if I'm the only one, but this stinks to me and I don't like it. I'm thankful I don't have children and particularly not in this guy's classroom. I think he sucks!

Oh and hard work my ass. That is the same crap you hear Arnold spouting about teachers AND nurses in California. AND shrub spouted similiar bs during the debates when he was asked about jobs being outsourced.

I think it is loud and clear what agenda is being pushed by this teacher.

15. Okay....
"Maybe to this guy he is taking them to a historic event--And historic in what sense?"

It's a Presidential Inauguration. That doesn't qualify as a viewable historic event?

"That his guy gets to stay in the white house? That THEY won? Or the truth, that they pulled the wool over a nation's eyes and cheated their asses back in? "

Based on what you wrote how do you know he was a Republican, was he complimenting Bush? What was it that set you off that this is some kind of indoctrination trip? What was the context of the hard work quote?

"He takes impressionable youth to this thing. In their minds'--wow, I get to take a trip that I've never taken before.' Maybe the thought will get a step further to equate who/what helped make this trip possible for them--a Republican. Not a Dem. "

So taking kids to an event equals indoctrination?

"Think about it. Who's ethics are 'hard work?'"

I was speaking of the kids hard work. Who knows what they had to do to go on this trip? It may have been grades, it may have been fundraising(for themselves for the trip), it may have been a combination.

"And why couldn't they work hard and earn a trip to something else that isn't so obviously endorsing a conservative/Republican agenda?"

I don't know. Going to DC to see an inaugaration is pretty cool though. Especailly for anyone politically interested regardless of who is getting inaugurated. Since you seem light on info, do you know if this trip had been planned post-election? Its certainly possible that this trip has been planned before that.

"I'm sorry if I'm the only one, but this stinks to me and I don't like it. I'm thankful I don't have children and particularly not in this guy's classroom. I think he sucks! "

Don't be sorry. Though I do think you have the sensitivity meter set on apocalypse is upon us. You seem to be pretty light on info and ready to jump to conclusions.
