1. The wine valleys!!!
Seriously, it's beautiful, delicious, and there's no smog. What's better than that?

2. If you like scenery...
... and like to drive, take a cruise up the coast highway (101); you can see the Hearst castle at San Simeon (see how old money was wasted), Carmel (how new money is wasted), Monterey, and then spend some time in Frisco and Marin County (redwoods, etc.).

From there, you can detour east to Yosemite and then work your way west and south through the wine country.

3. And don't forget Big Sur if you go that way.
There are some enchanting places there. You can hottub it at Esalen, or even spend the night. Eat and shop at Nepenthe, stay at Dietjens (sp?) or the more expensive Ventana.

At least try to see Esalen. For whatever weirdness they may have on tap there, the setting has got to be heaven on earth, one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

9. I gotta agree with the Central Coast
I just had a great weekend up there. We stayed in CAmbria and toured the Paso Robles Wine Country.

We visited Hearst Castle and Nitt Witt Ridge.

It is truly beautiful there.

4. Avoid Disneyland during summer. Too crowded. Try camping
Yosemite is the best summer spot but they need a new computer system to make reseservations fair. Now adays most people who call and try the Internet connection for three hours on the days reservations open don't get camp sites and have to go to scalpers.

7. Big Sur/Monterey Bay
Please be sure to see Big Sur, a pristine and unspoiled coast line, on your way to San Francisco.

8. it depends on what you want
if you nature, I would suggest the central coast

if you want tourist, I would suggest San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma areas

I think that spring is the best time to visit Wine County though

just avoid SoCal at all costs!

LOL

10. Yosemite National Park and then you can drive
down to Sequoia National Park. Beautiful in the summer, but may be crowded :-(.

If you absolutely have to go to the beach, I would go to the Central Coast. Cambria and north of there is beautiful. Just know that the ocean water temp. is cold!
