Coors closes in on Schaffer fundraisng after 1 week in race

Pete Coors banked $125,000 over lunch Monday.

A week after joining Colorado's U.S. Senate race, the chairman of Coors Brewing Co. has nearly matched his Republican primary opponent, former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer, in fund raising.

Coors, a first-time candidate, has tallied $210,000 and lined up another $400,000 in pledged donations, his campaign manager said Monday.

Schaffer's campaign manager said he'd raised more than $225,000 through Monday, a month after he entered the race.

On the Democrats' side, Attorney General Ken Salazar has nearly $700,000. School administrator Mike Miles has raised $187,498 in the two years he's been running.

It is also an indication that his candidacy has convinced people that he will be a formidable candidate.
