What can you tell me about it. Good, bad, specific good "things", specific "bad stuff" about the area. . .

1. Torrington
I'm 2 towns over. The Torrington Company was big until the de-industrialization of American from the last few decades. Has a walmart, k mart, part of home depot - half is in adjacent town of new hartford. BJ's club, target store. historical kind of downtown with old grande buildings, nice restored theater with semi famous acts coming through all the time. lots of empty buildings down town. a lowes, staples. has flatlands parallel to rt 8 on the southern end, commerce is along rt 202. mix of old and new, 4-8 car dealerships, new toyota dealer being built,

dont know the town political apparatus, has old hospital that's not bad. charlotte hungerford, close to beautiful litchfield town, in litchfield county.

it must have been idyllic in the post war 50's and 60's!

Isn't it disappointing to try and get some communication on these state boards?

2. I have been to the Warner Theatre. My daughters had a ballet recital there.
It is actually a really nice theater inside.
I live Terryville and I have been to Torrington a few times. I think it is biggest town around Northwest CT. More like a very small city.

5. I've been living here for 3 years
Edited on Sun Jul-04-10 05:04 PM by Autumn Colors
... but I live way on the outskirts of town. I could walk to the Torrington/Litchfield town line from my house. I just now saw this topic. Sorry, I see it's several months old by now.

Are you planning to do some house shopping? I can't offer any info on schools because I don't have any kids. The people who used to rent the house next door to me used to rent in the "downtown" part of Torrington (where there are a lot of big older homes that are now multi-family apts) and they got out of there when someone walked up to one of them (the adults) and tried to sell some crack. They had two teenage sons and didn't want them living in that kind of environment. If you rent or buy outside of the downtown area, it's not bad at all. The "desirable" parts of town are north and east (and that's where the country club is).

I really don't ever feel unsafe here, though (and I'm female, btw). I used to live in Monroe and will admit there were parts of Bridgeport I wouldn't venture into even during the daytime.

Politically, we vote in a school near the Stop & Shop and the only time I ever had to wait in a line to vote was for the 2008 election. I went in the early evening and there were only 3 people ahead of me. We fill out paper ballots and put them through the optical scan machines. Mine is a working class district that seems to vote mostly republican for local gov't. We did have a major upset in 2008, though, at the state level. The incumbent republican rep. was beat by democrat, Michelle Cook. So far, I like her a lot. She responds to emails (and sometimes within a matter of hours) ... and they're not canned responses either.

The house on the other side of me (not the rental I mentioned above) is actually for sale. The people who owned it when I moved here must have walked away from their mortgage because it sat abandoned for a long time. Someone bought it last Dec. on the cheap and fixed it up. It really didn't seem to need much in the way of fixing up, though. It's a raised ranch, newer than mine on around 1/2 acre. I think they're asking $235,000 for it. There are lots of kids in the neighborhood and it's a dead-end street. We are just at the bottom of the hill from a much newer, nicer housing development. A lot of those houses are for sale, too, but more expensive. I like it better down here in my part of the neighborhood. I always figure if someone's going to rob houses, they'll skip ours over for the nicer ones where the people with more money and nicer toys live. It's pretty quiet here.

Other than what was mentioned by others, there's a really nice little art-house cinema in Bantam. http://www.bantamcinema.com About a 10-minute drive. They're showing the Joan Rivers movie this week and she came and did a Q&A after 4 of the showings this past Friday. I believe it's the oldest continuously operating movie theater in the state.

What else do you want to know?
